ICYMI: Following the conclusion of his highly successful latest drama Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha, South Korean actor Kim Seon-ho found himself in hot water due to a former flame’s social media post accusing the “Good Boy” of bad behavior. But now that we’re learning more about what really went down, things aren’t as black and white as it seems. Here’s what you need to know.

 

A refresh on the controversy

A blind-item post went viral on South Korean social media Pann, where the author claimed she was the ex-girlfriend of a rising unnamed actor. She accused him of forcing her to get an abortion last year after she got pregnant during their relationship.

Korean netizens speculated that the post was about Kim Seon-ho, and when the actor issued an apology, netizens took that as an admission to the accusations.

 

A lot of backlash


This led to many fans, especially Korean fans, being disappointed and decrying the actor’s alleged actions. His social media account saw a huge drop in following, and some brands took down advertisements that featured him. Kim Seon-ho stepped back from his role as one of the main cast members of 2 Days, 1 Night, while his other upcoming projects announced changes in casting. All these happened within the first couple of days since the controversy first broke out.

 

The identity of the ex-girlfriend

Following the actor’s apology, the ex-girlfriend made another post on social media, still as an anonymous netizen, to say that there were “misunderstandings” between the two of them. She said that she regretted how big the issue had gotten, so she would be taking down the original post.


A few days later, rumors of the ex-girlfriend’s identity made rounds on Korean social media. According to the rumors, it was former KBS weather forecaster-turned-influencer Choi Young-ah. Many speculated that if it wasn’t her, Kim Seon-ho’s side would have issued a statement to avoid getting an innocent person involved. But there was no confirmation from either party involved.

 

Dispatch starts their investigation


South Korean media outlet Dispatch, famous for its exposés on Korean celebrities, contacted the former couple’s friends and acquaintances to investigate what really happened between them. According to Dispatch, some of their sources were the ones who reached out to the media outlet to help clear things up. And during their investigation, Dispatch reporters found that there are quite a number of discrepancies between the truth and what the ex-girlfriend claimed in her initial post.

 

A timeline of their relationship


Using the information they gathered from Kim Seon-ho’s friends and acquaintances, Dispatch pieced together a detailed timeline of the former couple’s relationship.

According to Dispatch’s timeline, the former couple met through mutual friends at the end of 2019 and started dating by March 2020. In early July 2020, the two broke up due to the ex-girlfriend’s alleged dishonesty. Later that month, they got back together, and the ex-girlfriend discovered she was pregnant before getting an abortion. The two continued their relationship until they broke up in May 2021.

 

What was different between the two accounts?

Notable differences in what Dispatch discovered in their investigation and what the ex-girlfriend claimed in her revelation are as follows:

  • The ex-girlfriend said they “had to date secretly”, but Dispatch’s sources said the couple would go on dates openly, visiting zoos, amusement parks, and the Seoul suburbs together.
  • The ex-girlfriend said that Kim Seon-ho reacted negatively when she told him about her pregnancy, but according to Dispatch, one of the actor’s closest friends, dubbed Friend B, said that Kim Seon-ho called the pregnancy a blessing and comforted his emotional ex-girlfriend, even if he was scared inside.
  • The ex-girlfriend accused the actor of changing his attitude towards her after the abortion, but Dispatch’s sources said that Kim Seon-ho even cooked seaweed soup for his ex-girlfriend. The dish is known to be good for women who have recently given birth.
  • The ex-girlfriend claimed Kim Seon-ho wanted to hide their relationship from his parents, but according to Dispatch’s sources, he introduced her to his parents after the abortion.

 

The biggest difference?

The biggest difference is also the most controversial claim the ex-girlfriend made. According to her post, Kim Seon-ho pressured her to have an abortion. But Friend B told Dispatch that the former couple agreed on the abortion. They debated on it a lot, and Friend B who came to accompany them said “the decision must not have been easy to make [for the couple].”

What does the actor’s agency have to say?

Just yesterday, Kim Seon-ho’s agency Salt Entertainment issued a statement to clarify the misunderstanding regarding their contract with the actor, as they were accused of conspiring with the ex-girlfriend to ruin his reputation.

After the Dispatch report was published, a reporter reached out to Salt Entertainment, but they declined to comment. “We have nothing to say. We apologize,” the agency source said.

 

The actor wanted to resolve this out of the spotlight

Dispatch ended their report with a statement from Friend B, who was said to be Kim Seon-ho’s closest friend: “Kim Seon-ho tried to reason with her assertions. He remarked ‘Because It’s true that we did abort the baby, and this was once someone I loved.’ He tried his hardest to understand. He didn’t want to argue in the eyes of the public. That’s why rather than refuting her claims, he apologized instead. That’s the kind of person Seon-ho is.“


It seemed that instead of refuting his ex-girlfriend’s claims, Kim Seon-ho decided to issue a public apology and try to privately resolve this issue between the two of them.

Since the publication of Dispatch’s report, there have been no further statements from the parties involved.
