Social media is buzzing from several sexual allegations against Chinese pop star Kris Wu that recently resurfaced. The celebrity drew flak after a teenager came forward detailing how he lures young girls and eventually assaults them. After the strong accusations, China’s biggest brands start cutting ties with Wu. But we’ve yet to see the end of this entire issue. Here’s what happened:
Kris Wu (Wu Yi Fan) is a Chinese-Canadian singer, actor, producer, and model. He debuted as a member of South Korean K-pop group EXO in 2012 but then left the band in 2014. Since then, he flew back to China and has successfully built a solo career. Wu even had his Hollywood debut with the film XXX: Return of Xander Cage starring alongside actors like Vin Diesel and Ruby Rose.

In early July, the 30-year-old was accused of sexual assault by 19-year-old college student Du Meizhu. She had an interview with NetEase Entertainment where she alleges Kris raped her and 30 other girls, some of them minors.
According to Du, he would lure the girls by pretending to recruit them as new artists or female leads for his music videos. Wu would then somehow get them drunk and take advantage of them. The accusation was posted on China’s social media platform, Weibo and has already reached millions of likes.
Du, an actress, says she went to Wu’s house “under the impression that they’re to discuss work arrangements.” But she was made to drink alcohol, blacked out, and woke up on his bed. Du also mentioned that before the entire thing happened, she wanted to leave but Wu’s agent “threatened” her that the superstar should have a “good time” or else her acting career is over.
Du Meizhu, who accused Kris Wu of preying on underage girls, released screen recording allegedly of chat w/ Kris Wu’s staff discussing monetary compensation for retracting her accusations. She asked for 8 million yuan ($1.2 million USD). (1/2)

Du Meizhu is one brave woman. She’s willing to go head to head with one of China’s biggest stars to put an end to his alleged dark deeds. Wu’s camp initially bribed her with money in exchange for her deleting posts against the star and saying they were “unverified.” Du just took screenshots of the conversation, gathering more evidence for her claims.
On top of this legal nightmare that’s brewing, Wu’s actions have damaged the girls involved in more ways than one. In one post, Du said that after her horrible experience dating him, she no longer wants to have a relationship.
Du Meizhu says she will give Kris Wu 24 hours to hold a press conference and announce he’s leaving the Chinese entertainment industry. Otherwise, she says she will ruin him.

Aside from the evidence Du has compiled, she also demanded that Wu do a few things. In the next 24 hours, she wants him to hold a press conference saying he’ll leave the Chinese entertainment industry and go back to Canada. She also wants him to issue handwritten apology letters to his victims.
Du Meizhu shares video of money transfer to her account allegedly from a bank account belonging to Kris Wu.

The first time Du’s story came out, Wu and his team denied it and said they will be filing a lawsuit against her. Shortly after, Du reveals she received hush money from Wu’s team amounting to 500,000 yuan (roughly Php 3,905,226.43). Du said she returned the money in installments and is ready for any legal action against her.

After the intense turn of events, Wu himself took to Weibo to post a message stressing how he is being wronged. He claims he met Du last December 2020 but he didn’t offer her drinks or take her phone number. He also stressed his innocence denying he is a rapist who targets underage girls. “If I’ve done anything like this, I’ll turn myself in jail. I will legally take accountability for my words here,” he ends.

After Du’s claims gain traction across the globe, several brands currently working with Kris cut off ties with him. This includes Chinese cosmetics and skincare brand Kans and household cleaning products maker Liby. Wu was the face of many other luxury brands in China including Bulgari, Louis Vuitton, Lancôme, L’Oreal, and Porsche. Some of these brands have already deleted all their Weibo posts mentioning Wu.

Fans also noticed something about actress Lin Xiya. In the middle of the controversy, Xiya posted a cryptic message on Weibo that translated to “Seven years, justice? Bring it on.” Xiya was rumored to have dated Wu in 2014. Some fans did some calculating and concluded that back in 2014 she was only 18 years old, adding fuel to the accusation that Wu dates minors.
yall still defend that rapist and tryna clean his searches with “kris wu cute”? pic.twitter.com/sPpKY1HST0

Wu’s fans are torn on social media. Some are attempting to “clear the searches” or flood timelines and Wu’s keywords with positive messages. While some, of course, are disgusted by the idea that fans still support him after the entire issue.
I can’t be against him until it is proven, specifically after you take a look at the girl’s behavior that is strange… I will wait for proof, but so far I can’t bring myself to hate him.

kris wu stans clearing the searches for him. y’all are sick for putting fangirling over moral values
— Paula (@syjungies) July 18, 2021
sucks to say that kris wu brought me to kpop and he was my very first bias but y’all fans need to stop clearing searches for him. let the truth come out. this is a serious issue and if you truly care for the victims, you would help bring light into this. be a human first.

It looks like it’s going to take a while for the entire issue to be sorted out. Wu’s fans are understandably heartbroken but if they refuse to believe the accusations, they can sit this one through and wait for the result of legal procedures.
