Probably the most eccentric act of the night, Grimes was loads of fun to watch. Along with her fellow dancers, she lit up the stage with her vibrance and energy. Night had just fallen, so she was one of the first acts to have a full-on lights display. Not showing an ounce of fatigue, she danced her set away to hits like Flesh without Blood and California.
Definitely the ladies’s choice at the festival, The 1975 did not disappoint. They played a clean and pretty much flawless set that featured most of their hits. They also had the longest set of the event. The front row of the crowd was composed of almost 100% female fans screaming their hearts out. They played during sunset which was an added bonus since the heat was fading, and the light show was blending in perfectly with the color of the sky. Adding new swagger to their style of play, The 1975 seemed like they had shed their teeny-bopper pop band skin and transformed into a full-fledged indie pop band that can entertain any crowd.
Chvrches was, if pressed to accurately describe in a single word, phenomenal. Perhaps the best known act to grace the stage of Laneway, Chvrches connected deeply with the crowd by playing the best of their catchy hit songs. Being the co-headliner, they lit up the night sky with their amazing light show, exuding energy while engaging the crowd. Everybody was dancing, everybody was happy and it was the perfect act leading up to the headliner: Flume.
Even if the crowd had already been through a day of intense heat and it was fast approaching the sixth hour of the evening, they did not fail to dance the night away to Flume. Flume was encased in an intense glowing cubic DJ booth that would change lights according to the beat. The graphics of Flume were so mesmerizing that you had to step back or you’d probably get a seizure. It was an amazing way to end the night–dancing away to Flume’s Never Be like You.
The crowd of Laneway was amazing. People from all walks of life came to enjoy the show. Just take a look at this bunch of crazies! It’s safe to say it was an epic festival for everyone involved.
