Did You Know Lee Jong Suk Was Annoyed at IU When They First Met in 2012?

Before 2022 ended, the greatest plot twist K-drama fans didn’t have in their bingo cards happened — South Korean celebrities Lee Jong Suk and IU (real name Lee Ji Eun) confirmed they’re dating. Cue everyone rolling on the floor in kilig.

And if you still think these are fan assumptions, stop right there. Lee Jong Suk’s agency, HighZium Studio themselves confirmed the good news.

“Actor Lee Jong Suk and IU recently progressed from being close acquaintances into being a couple, and they are maintaining a serious relationship,” read the statement. “Please show lots of support so they can continue their beautiful relationship.”

After a few hours, IU’s agency, EDAM Entertainment, backed the statement up with their own confirmation: “IU and Lee Jong Suk recently progressed from being close acquaintances into a good relationship. We ask for the warm reception of fans.”

Korean news outlet Dispatch shared that the couple has already been in a relationship since four months ago but this is yet to be confirmed.

 

Did their love story start 10 years ago?

They might’ve started dating only four months ago but Lee Jong Suk (34) and IU (29) have known each other for about a decade. Back in 2012, they met for the first time when they were paired as Inkigayo hosts. Lee Jong Suk even said he was “a little bit annoyed” at IU for suggesting to wear elaborate costumes for the program.

That Inkigayo gig sparked a warm friendship between the two. Throughout the years, Lee Jong Suk would never fail to show IU support. He even attends her concerts — complete with waving lightsticks — like when he was spotted in IU’s “The Golden Hour: Under the Orange Sun” concert at Seoul Olympic Stadium. Early this year, IU even sang at the wedding of Lee Jong Suk’s brother.

On December 30, 2022, a day before the news broke, Lee Jong Suk, the fantastic actor that he is, accepted a Daesang or Grand Prize for his role as Park Chang-ho in the K-drama Big Mouth. During his speech, he thanked an unknown person for encouraging him always even through military service.

“After completing my military service, I had a lot of worries, fears, and troubles plaguing me. But at that time, there was someone who helped me to find a good direction as a human being and to think positive thoughts,” he said.

“I want to tell that person that I’m thankful to them for always being so admirable, that I’ve liked them a lot for a very long time, and that I respect and admire them greatly,” added Lee Jong Suk. It effectively stirred romance rumors which were then answered the next day.

It was IU all along.

Getting confirmation from their agencies is cool and all but knowing that the couple involved took the time to address their relationship in public is another level of kilig. Both IU and Lee Jong Suk took to their fan cafes (online message boards) to talk about their relationship and thank the fans.

IU said that Lee Jong Suk has always been a “reliable and cute person” who has supported and encouraged her for a long time.

“I think one of the reasons that my pride and passion for work is surging even more these days is because I have a good friend who compliments me for a long time up close,” she said. “Since you have all found out now, we will date quietly and beautifully to not worry my fans.”

As for Lee Jong Suk, he opened up about how he liked IU “beyond puppy love” all those years ago but a relationship wasn’t possible then.

“Even when I was working hard living my own way, she was a strange existence who always took up a corner of my heart,” he said.

“She is an amazing person who helps me with my path and concerns of life as a friend, is someone I can rely on, is younger but sometimes feels older, and is like a grown adult but also someone I want to protect. Now she makes me want to be a better person,” added the actor.
