“Wala nang pag-asa dito, migrate na lang ako sa [insert country here].” is our favorite line when things get really bad. Perseverance ain’t our middle name.
Their formula for explaining is this: Adjective + Historical Evidence = Pride, Compassion + 9/11 = Unity. They can objectively tell you what makes them a proud American, and boy, their history is really interesting. Meanwhile, 34.4% Filipinos are still arguing that the Marcos era makes up the Filipino pride, or so they say. Dig deeper, and you’ll find lots of reasons to be a proud Filipino.
God Bless Daniel Day Lewis’ depiction as Lincoln. But seriously, we barely have any decent (and historically accurate) films dedicated to our rich Philippine history. Ours are few and far between. Let’s all thank Raymond Red for Sakay and Jerrold Tarog for Heneral Luna, and for convincing the Filipino people that we need more quality films about our past.
