Mysteries and thrillers have always fascinated Pinoys, whether in fiction or real life. Tales of haunted houses in Baguio, ghosts in the streets of Quezon City, or urban legends about snakes in mall dressing rooms are just part and parcel of the Filipino experience. Chalk it up to morbid curiosity or vicarious thrill-seeking, but we love a good hold-your-breath edge-of-your-seat story. That’s probably why we love thrillers so much. They’re especially gratifying when they’re well-written, keeping you guessing from start to finish, or even solving crimes as the story unfolds.
Up for some scare? Premium streaming app Lionsgate Play gives PLDT Home customers free access to Hollywood mystery/thriller flicks to be enjoyed at home until June 1, 2023. Check out some of the best ones here and watch it all uninterrupted with PLDT Home’s fast internet speeds!
Hold on to your seats as Lionsgate Play’s original mystery thriller Mindcage takes you on a rollercoaster ride full of psychological twists and turns. Detectives Jake Doyle (Martin Lawrence) and Mary Kelly (Melissa Roxburgh) are confounded by the crimes of a copycat killer who murders women and decorates them to look like peaceful statues, the signature move of a serial killer called The Artist.
The problem? The Artist is currently serving his sentence in prison. As the detectives ask for his help to hunt down the copycat killer, they are lured into a diabolical game of cat and mouse.
Directed by Mauro Borrelli, Mindcage will satisfy thriller fans with its many unexpected turns, fusing murder and art into a grisly story of an imaginative criminal. Seeing that it’s comedian Martin Lawrence’s comeback thriller also makes it an interesting flick to add to your watch list.
Movies are a whole level of horrifying when you realize their plots could actually happen in real life. Say, an extreme case of road rage – as shown in Derrick Borte’s American action/thriller Unhinged.
It all starts when two complete strangers have the worst of days. Unhinged stars Caren Pistorius as stressed-out single mother Rachel Flynn, and Russell Crowe as a deranged divorcee who has nothing left to lose. What do you get when they tick each other off on the road? The film might just make you never want to get into another four-wheeled vehicle again.
Swimming with Sharks starts off innocent enough, as it follows a young naïve college intern entering her first job. But it doesn’t take long before the plot pulls the rug from under the viewers’ feet.
Doe-eyed Lou Simms (Kiernan Shipka) has just started interning for overbearing Fountain Pictures CEO, Joyce Holt (Diane Kruger). But underneath the facade, Lou is a sly woman who has long been obsessed with her boss. And she is ready to do anything – including getting her hands dirty – to get closer to her idol. With six episodes of less than 25 minutes each, Swimming with Sharks just might be your next biggest weekend binge.
Departure pokes the interest of conspiracy theory lovers with a fast-paced gripping plot about a passenger plane that disappears over the Atlantic Ocean. The 2019 suspense drama series follows Transport Safety Investigation Bureau agent Kendra Malley (Archie Panjabi), tasked to locate the remains of Flight 716. Kendra attempts to unravel the mystery with the whole world watching, but the nearer she gets to the truth, the harder she has to fight against dark forces seemingly hindering the investigation.
When a series of crimes shakes up the popular beach community of Cape Cod, National Marine Fisheries Service agent Jackie Quiñones (Monica Raymund) attempts to solve it. But juggling murder cases while fighting her addiction and staying sober proves to be a heavy task – especially when she finds herself at odds with Sgt. Ray Abruzzo (James Badge Dale), a member of the Cape Cod Interagency Narcotics Unit. With stakes running high, Jackie soon finds herself spiraling from the stress of the investigation.
Hightown might be a slow-burn TV series, but nonetheless, it’s a gritty crime drama that’s going to pull you in.
A series based on the 2012 debut novel of Australian author Daniel O’Malley, The Rook starts with a young woman named Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell) waking up in the rain, surrounded by dead bodies, with no memory of who she is. Eventually, she discovers she possesses extraordinary abilities and that she’s a high-ranking official for Checquy, a British secret service that tracks those with paranormal abilities. Myfanwy races to get her memories back while slowly learning whom she can and can’t trust.
Widowed mother Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) thinks her new friend Emily (Blake Lively) has it all – a successful career and a loving family on top of her killer looks. But when Emily mysteriously disappears one day, Stephanie takes it upon herself to investigate and dig into her friend’s past. Soon, Stephanie finds out there’s more to Emily than meets the eye. A Simple Favor is filled with twists, secrets, and betrayals that will have you questioning which side you’re on.
After getting some harsh criticism from a prominent art gallery owner, photographer Leon Kaufman (Bradley Cooper) struggles to capture gritty shots of New York City. His search for darker subject matter leads him to the path of a serial killer, Mahogany (Vinnie Jones), who massacres late-night subway commuters. Leon develops an obsession with Mahogany, which soon lands him in harm’s way. With hair-raising, blood-curdling scenes and a shocking twist, The Midnight Meat Train is a thriller flick not for the faint of heart.
