The highly-anticipated anime live-action adaptation of One Piece is finally streaming on Netflix, much to the delight of countless fans. The series has gotten rave reviews, but one particular cast member has stolen our hearts: Mackenyu Arata, who plays the intense swordsman Roronoa Zoro. He’s the son of the great Japanese actor Chiba Shinichi

It seems that acting was destined for Mackenyu, given that he is the son of the internationally renowned actor Chiba Shinichi, who launched into stardom through his martial arts skills – first in Japan, then internationally. Mackenyu said in his Vogue Hong Kong write-up that his father had always encouraged him to carve his own path. 

“I have been very familiar with the industry since I was a little boy,” he said. “But my father never pressured me into being an actor.” 

Years later, he’s established himself as one of today’s global stars!

He’s a man of many talents

Growing up, the One Piece star dabbled in numerous interests, such as horseback riding, wrestling, gymnastics, and Kyokushin Karate, to name a few. “I love clothing and jewelry. I wanted to create a curated wardrobe with just the pieces I like,” the actor shared.

Mackenyu’s no stranger to anime live-action adaptations, having starred in them on numerous occasions. His filmography includes Tokyo Ghoul S (2019), Tonkatsu DJ Agetarō (2020), Fullmetal Alchemist: The Revenge of Scar (2022), and Fullmetal Alchemist: The Final Alchemy (2022). 

He has also worked with Kento Yamazaki (from the hit Netflix series Alice in Borderland) in the Japanese TV series Todome no Kiss!

He got ear piercings for his role as Zoro

If dedication took on human form, it probably looks like Mackenyu. ICYDK, he went so far as to personally get ear piercings to faithfully nail Zoro’s distinctive trio of gold earrings. And, of course, he looks badass while wearing them!
