Malacañan holds a significant part in Philippine history and culture, steadfastly enduring for over a century. Numerous presidents have graced its hallowed halls, and the palace has survived earthquakes, fires, typhoons, and even war. But recently, Malacañan found itself caught in the middle of a controversy following a recent fashion show. Here’s what happened:
Last Tuesday, a fashion show entitled “Isang Pilipinas” was held at the Goldenberg Mansion in Malacañan. The event showcased the creations of sought-after Filipino fashion designer Michael Leyva inspired by the magnificence and culture of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. It was an initiative by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos for Buwan ng Wika.
“Bilang isang manlilikha, labis kong ipinag-papasalamat ang mabigyan ng isang pagkakataon na maging tulay upang maipakita ang galing at talento ng mga Pilipino saan mang sulok ng mundo. Labis kong ipinag-mamalaki na ako ay isang Pilipino,” Leyva wrote on a Facebook post.
The event was attended by notable celebrities and public figures like Heart Evangelista, Bianca Manalo, and Mariel Rodriguez.
Despite the event’s success, the fashion spectacle didn’t sit well with many Pinoy netizens. Some felt the event was quite off-putting given the country’s current circumstances.
“Organizing a fashion show in this esteemed venue during difficult times doesn’t align with the prevailing sentiments of the Filipinos,” one netizen wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The Malacañang Palace serves as the residence of every Filipino, symbolizing the majority and not just the affluent 10% of our society.

Some all argued that all events held in Malacañan cost taxpayers’ money, even if they’re fundraisers.
All events held in Malacañang, even if they are fundraisers, cost taxpayer money. We pay for the electricity, the security, the staff who help organize them, the food during coordination meetings, and the list goes on.
Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.#FashionShow

In 2017, netizens also called out Malacañan after it was used for the pre-debut photoshoot of former president Rodrigo Duterte’s granddaughter. The incident spawned countless memes, including the satire page Malacañang Events and Catering Services.
Duterte defended her granddaughter, saying, “Ano ba naman ‘yan? Kadugo ko ‘yan eh. Small matter, gamitin lang ‘yung Malacañan. Wala naman ako doon.”
In a released statement, Tantoco said the government didn’t spend anything on the event and clarified it was paid for by the designers and private institutions they partner with.
“The output is a collaboration between various creatives in the industry and creates awareness (thereby generating demand) for local fabrics and designs, which have always been instrumental in our cultural identity,” Tantoco added.
