Maxene Magalona’s Instagram post has created quite a buzz after it seems to confirm her split with Rob Mananquil. The 35-year-old shared a photo of her eating alone captioned with “No date? No problem!” But while Maxene hasn’t explicitly stated the split, she did talk about the perks of being single and childless. Here’s what we learned.
Maxene Magalona further writes in the caption: “You have full control of your schedule. You can literally do anything you want on any day at whatever time.” She cites watching movies in the cinemas alone, taking herself out on dates, and even going on long solo drives “especially when her vibration is low.”
“One time, I even felt the sudden urge to buy crystals for extra protection and I was able to do it easily because I have no one else to think of but myself,” Maxene continues. If she were with a partner or had kids, her focus would be taking care of them and arranging her schedule around them. But as a single person, she’s free to do practically anything under the sun.
“Life is all about perspective. Do you see your glass half empty or half full? I see mine overflowing,” Maxene ends.
Being single means you’re your own person and that’s an awesome thing. But that isn’t to say it’s “better” than getting married and starting your own family. Maxene simply embraces the fact that each woman’s life is different, the seasons she goes through are uniquely her own.
What other perks of being single has Maxene left out from her post?
When you don’t have a family of your own, you can focus on what you have right in front of you. You get to spend more time with your parents and siblings and cultivate deep, lasting friendships outside your family. All your efforts are in keeping these relationships strong. We all know people in a relationship who tend to only focus on their partner while their friends fade into the background.
Being single means you get to spend a lot of time with yourself and, along the way, discover more about yourself. You get to explore your passions, see the world, try something new, and the list could go on. Knowing more about yourself allows you to be comfortable in your own skin.
It sounds selfish but that’s singledom. Instead of looking after a partner or cleaning up a house ransacked by toddlers, you get to kick your feet up on the couch for a great “me time.” This is a season in your life where you get to do anything you want. And in focusing solely on yourself, your mind isn’t cluttered with the mental toll of being in a relationship. You’ve got space to think. When you have a family, you sort of lose part of that flexibility.
Being alone isn’t synonymous with being lonely. It simply means you’re your own person and you get to reap the benefits of being independent and self-sufficient. You don’t need someone else to look after you and you don’t need to look after anyone else. Bad day at work? Embrace the peace of a quiet apartment or go out for some drinks until sunset. Craving food? Place an order at your favorite restaurant or cook for yourself. Granted, everyone needs to learn all of these things as a #FullyFunctioningAdult but it’s definitely one of the greatest perks of being single.
Your friends suddenly planned an out-of-town trip for the weekend? Go! Your work needs you to fly abroad for a few weeks? There’s nothing holding you back. Being single means a life full of unexpected adventures.
Being single is also good for your finances — if you know how to control yourself. Without anyone else to spend for, you get to enjoy your hard-earned money. TBH, going on dates is too expensive in this economy anyway. A study in America also found that married couples have more credit card debt than single folks.
“I just like being on my own. Relationships are messy and feelings are always getting hurt,” says Summer Finn (Zoey Deschanel, 500 Days of Summer). It’s a perfect quote for diving into the perks of being single if you look past the irony of Summer actually making things complicated for Tom Hansen. Since you operate on your own, life is less complicated as a single person. You call the shots and make the decisions.
We’re sure meeting “the One” and creating a family is also a splendid way to spend one’s life. We’ve seen too many cute baby photos and #CoupleGoals on our timelines. But as it stands, life looks different for each person. What you can do is embrace the season of life you’re in. But while you’re still single, make sure to enjoy the perks to the fullest.
