It’s been a loud day for the pageant-crazy Philippines: we’re the host country for this year’s Miss Universe, Steve Harvey is back (he didn’t let us down this time!) and our bet, Maxine Medina, made it to the top 6.
Despite us not bagging the crown this year, there is still so much to take in from today’s Miss Universe show. Here are the most notable moments from the today’s pageant that got us all bursting with emotions:
If there’s anyone who slayed that red carpet today aside from the candidates, it’s Bretman Rock. I mean, look at that shining makeup! He may be a little nervous while hosting (it’s his first time!) but he still looked fierce and gorgeous, especially when Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach put a sparkling crown on his head. Dang, guuurl.
Former Miss Universe titleholders, an editorial director of a fashion magazine, a former model and a multi-award winning producer—all in one room. What else could we ask for?
Most people doubted that the old hitmakers will wow the Miss Universe audience, but when Boyz II Men and Flo Rida dropped their old beats, everyone sang as if it’s the early 2000s. Admit it, you still remember the lyrics to their songs!
Hearing Steve Harvey’s voice feels like we’re in a time warp back to last year’s crowning incident, and it became quite a gag now; he made tons of jokes about it during the show. Our favorite was when Pia Wurtzbach handed him reading glasses, and he obliged by wearing them before he announces the winner. And thankfully, history didn’t repeat itself. Great job, Steve!
It was a competition of women with slim bodies, but Miss Canada begs to differ. Despite being “bigger” compared to the other candidates, she was confident, and that’s one of the reasons why she made it to the top nine. She may have not won the crown, but she’s definitely won our hearts.
Everyone was #shookt when Myanmar brought what looks like a piece of wall with her during the national costume competition. Her costume depicts hand-puppetry, a traditional art in the Myanmar culture, ergo the strings and theater curtains at her back. She even did a short performance! It was very unique that it deserved the best national costume award.
The costume was really heavy according to her, and she even thought of putting it down. But as they say, “nothing worth having comes easy” Congrats, Miss Myanmar!
Iris Mittenaere’s win as Miss Universe was a historic feat for France: she ended the country’s drought of more than 60 years in this pageant. We can’t wait to see her future activities as the new queen!

This, probably, was the most rewarding part of all: when our queen owned the Miss Universe stage for the last time. We’ve prepared all our tissues for this, and it didn’t disappoint: from her stunning blue Michael Cinco dress to her tearful farewell speech. She has represented the country so well, and she wass really one-of-a-kind. There may be a lot more Miss Universe titleholders in the future, but there is only one Pia Wurtzbach.
