Choosing the best bet for any sort of Filipino pageantry is a challenge — the contestants are always gorgeous (we expect nothing less from Filipinos!). This year’s candidates for Miss Universe Philippines 2020 are no different. It’s a tight race for this year’s batch as the grand finals this weekend, on October 25 looms closer. Last October 21, the ladies went through a preliminary interview which gave them a chance to showcase their Q&A abilities. Here are some that shined:
Boholana-Belgian Pauline C. Amelinckx charmed everyone off their feet with her preliminary interview. She showed confidence, ease, and finesse in answering the questions thrown her way. This is why it didn’t come as a surprise when we saw “Miss Bohol” trending the next day. However, Amelinckx has a lot of room for improvement to be on Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s level of eloquence. But we can already see her as a strong contender for the crown.
Before joining the Miss Universe Philippines 2020 pageant, Amelinckx won the crown at the Miss Bohol 2017 and Miss JCI Philippines 2017 pageants. She was also crowned Miss Global Beauty Queen Philippines 2018 during Mutya Ng Pilipinas 2018.
Aklanon beauty Christelle Abello is having quite a busy year. Aside from being one of the candidates vying for the crown, Abello has also announced that she is Ginebra San Miguel’s new Calendar Girl for 2021. During the preliminary interview, we thoroughly enjoyed how she answered with confidence and candidness. Her charming wit even made the people in the room laugh and relax.
Michele Gumabao is “trading in [her] sneakers one more time” as a candidate for Miss Universe Philippines 2020. The ABS-CBN Sports and Action TV presenter and volleyball star is representing Quezon City. Previously, Gumabao was crowned Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2018 and although she didn’t win Miss Globe 2018, she finished as part of the Top 15. Gumabao’s experience makes her one of the strongest contenders from this year’s Miss Universe PH batch.
Alaiza Malinao is a complete package: beauty, brains, and charm. You’ll easily fall in love with her gorgeous features and that beautiful warm skin tone. Throughout the interview, she kept flashing her smile, albeit nervous and unsure, and proceeded to answer the questions wonderfully. Malinao is a professional model and a mental health awareness advocate. She previously participated in Binibining Pilipinas 2015 and represented the Philippines during the fourth cycle of Asia’s Next Top Model.
Camarines Sur’s Krizzia Lynn Moreno graduated magna cum laude from the University of Santo Tomas and is currently working as a flight attendant for Cebu Pacific. Moreno has been a part of pageants before when she participated in Miss Earth Philippines 2019 so she definitely has an edge in the competition. Her articulate and eloquent way of answering the interview questions exudes the confidence we’re looking for in a Miss Universe winner.
Rabiya Mateo’s beautiful features complement her sweet and gentle nature. Her cool and calm demeanor during the interview tells us she doesn’t let the pressure get to her easily. Her sure answers are just cherries on top. Mateo was born to an Ilongga mother and an Indian father. She works as a lecturer and has a passion for education.
While most of the girls sounded nervous but Caviteña Kimberly Hakenson (Billie Hakenson) was an exception. She entered the room proud and sure that she was going to nail that interview. The short-haired beauty is a flight attendant for Cebu Pacific. Additionally, she advocates for self-love and women empowerment and has also shared that she is bisexual. “Miss Cavite” occupied slots on Twitter after netizens saw Hakenson’s interview online. Suffice to say we’ll be keeping a close eye on her.
On top of her stunning looks, Danica Reynes’ humor and personality make her stand out. The Cagayan Province hopeful is a singer and performer by profession (even performing a snippet during the interview) and a former international flight attendant based in Saudi Arabia. Reynes exuded energy and ease, something that’s important in pressuring competitions like these. We hope she goes far!
