No More Creeps! Here’s an Essential Guide to a Safe and Smooth Motorbike Ride-Hailing Experience

Jun 4, 2024   •   Kyzia Maramara

We’ve all seen that viral post on X (formerly Twitter) about a female passenger who got creeped out by her motorbike driver. His intrusive questions and inappropriate physical contact throughout the ride were a reminder of how passengers should always stay vigilant. While motorbike rides are the best for zipping around the city, safety always comes first. Here’s how to keep your next motorbike ride-hailing experience as smooth and trauma-free as possible:

Check your driver’s info

Before getting on the motorcycle, confirm that the details on your app match the driver and the vehicle information displayed. If you’re unsure, ask the driver to confirm his name or your name as his passenger. For extra precaution, you can ask for the driver’s ID.

Make sure your rider is in the proper gear

To further verify your ride, make sure your rider is wearing the official uniform of the ride-hailing service. If there’s a mismatch, or if the driver is concealing their face, you might want to cancel the booking for peace of mind. Remember, stay vigilant!

Don’t reveal unnecessary information about yourself

It’s natural to strike up a conversation with your driver. But when the questions veer into personal territory – your workplace, school, home address, or who you’re meeting – it’s time to keep silent. Remember that it’s okay to politely deflect questions that make you feel uncomfortable.

Share your trip details with friends and family

For that extra layer of safety and protection, let your friends or family know that you’ll be taking a motorbike ride-hailing service. The app should have a feature that lets you share your trip details, including the driver’s information and your estimated arrival time.

Be aware of your surroundings

Whenever you’re in public, remember to always keep your guard up. Be aware of your surroundings throughout the ride. If you can help it, avoid using earphones or using your phone since you’ll need to be responsive to traffic and potential hazards.

Trust your instincts

If something feels wrong, it probably is. Don’t be afraid to cancel the ride and or ask the driver to stop if you feel unsafe at any point.

Stay safe out there!
