Since its first staging in 2010, the homegrown musical Mula sa Buwan has captured the hearts of audiences. Now that it’s back on stage (under the direction of Mikko Angeles), now’s your chance to see this modern Filipino classic. Just in case you need some extra prodding to get your tickets, here are 8 things you should know about the musical:
Written by Pat Valera, Mula sa Buwan is based on Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac, set in the Philippines during World War II. For those unfamiliar with the source material, it revolves around a love triangle between Cyrano, Roxane, and Christian — Cyrano helps Christian win Roxane’s love by ghostwriting his love letters, even though he is secretly in love with her himself.
Mula sa Buwan features all-original all-Filipino music, composed by William Elvin Manzano.
The cast of Mula sa Buwan includes some of the most talented artists in the Philippine theater scene, many of them reprising their beloved roles from previous stagings. Notable names in the cast include Myke Salomon as Cyrano, Gab Pangilinan as Roxane, MC Dela Cruz as Christian, Jerom Canlas as Tatum, and Jillian Ita-as as Gabriel.
It’s always a treat to witness an ensemble that has built chemistry over time, and this cast is no exception.
Mula Sa Buwan may revolve around a love story, but it’s also about fighting the good fight — not just on wartime battlefields but also within society’s rigid norms. By vividly capturing the defiant spirit of the misfits and dreamers who carved their own space in 1940s Manila, the musical celebrates those who dare to be different.
From the use of classic Tagalog songs to incorporating traditional dances, Mula sa Buwan celebrates Filipino culture and identity.
At its core, Mula sa Buwan is a story about love in all its forms – unrequited, selfless, and enduring. The musical reminds us that love transcends time, place, and even war.
The set design and costumes in Mula sa Buwan are breathtakingly beautiful. From the vibrant colors of traditional Filipiniana dresses to the rustic charm of old Manila buildings, every detail adds to the overall immersive experience.
Whether you’re a theater enthusiast or just looking for a heartwarming and entertaining show, Mula sa Buwan is a must-watch for all ages. Its universal themes of love, sacrifice, and identity will resonate with audiences of different generations.
You can catch Mula Sa Buwan until September 8, 2024 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theatre in Makat. Get your tickets here.
