President Nadine Lustre is the latest guest for the local podcast Wake Up with Jim and Saab and although the episode only runs for 45 minutes there was a lot to unpack. Nadine clarifies her political stance, doles out sage advice on breakups and healing yourself, and shares how she stays unbothered from all the criticism thrown her way. Here are 8 new things about President Nadine we’ve learned from the podcast:
Like any city dweller who gets a taste of that peaceful island life, Nadine has plans to move to the Surfing Capital of the Philippines. In fact, she practically already lives there, having spent the past few months staying on the island. She shared that after her lock-in taping for her upcoming movie Greed, she will most likely officially move to Siargao, leaving behind the traffic, pollution, and noise of the metro. Sana all.
The actress finds it hilarious that her fans have a running joke on “President Nadine Lustre.” While we can’t pinpoint exactly when it started, we do know the title is bestowed on her because she’s a palaban queen in her own right. She empowers women, she is a badass fashionista, and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind. “I don’t even know how I was elected,” she tells Jim on the podcast.
What does she have to say for her iconic “C’mon guys, it’s 2017!” line? “Every year it changes and every year I have a new meme,” Nadine says with a laugh. “I find it hilarious. Personally, I love memes! I love it when Filipinos create their own edits, all of that stuff. I find it super hilarious and entertaining.”
Looks like it’s President Nadine Lustre approved! You can bet your 13th-month pay that a brand new “C’mon guys, it’s 2022!” meme will be born come January.
Although it’s funny now, the “it’s 2017” line was actually Nadine reacting to a reporter who asked if she and James were living together.
“I actually snapped when they asked me that because I thought it was very rude for them to ask me about my living situation. It was a very personal question. And the thing is, I don’t like it when people try to interfere with my personal stuff, especially if it’s something that a normal person would be offended with,” she said.
“It’s not that I’m rude,” she clarifies. “It’s just that I’m very straight to the point. If a person is low-key insulting me, I can see past that.”
And if you think Nadine is a cold human being for being like that, then you should try being a celebrity. She goes on to say she never understood why public figures have to struggle with the invasion of privacy when reporters can treat with respect those who aren’t in the industry.
“I think that’s also why me just not giving a damn started was because I can see how people treated celebrities. I know how people see us in a way [that they can] just bash us online without even caring, they can just say whatever hurtful things to us. And we’re used to it but at the same time we’re still human,” she says.

A few weeks ago, a basher posted online that Nadine was gaining weight and even said her rumored boyfriend Christophe Bariou might leave her for it. The actress only had a short but sweet reply: “Ew body shamer.” Mic. Drop. Nadine shared what prompted her to reply to the basher.
“You know what? I am gaining weight because the food in Siargao is just so good, I’m not gonna lie,” she told Jim and Saab. “It’s not that I’m insecure about me gaining weight… I like my body now… [but] if a girl who’s younger than me who’s not really confident and who’s still figuring out herself reads that comment how do you think she would feel?”
She reiterates she likes shutting bashers down because she wants to send a message that hateful words aren’t okay and you should stand up for yourself. There you go, a conscious queen who wants her fans and followers to be strong too!

One reason why Nadine is such a refreshing young artist is that she isn’t afraid to speak her mind and make a stand. Even with something as tricky as politics. She made waves online in early October after she showed her support for VP Leni Robredo’s presidential bid. Nadine shared on Instagram stories a video of VP Leni announcing her run for the presidency and pink-washed graphics that said “Vote Better” and “Halalan 2022.”
“You want to support who you want to support and you shouldn’t be afraid to say it to people,” she says on the podcast. “Why would you be ashamed of your pick? If you don’t like my pick, that’s your problem. Kasi ako, I know who I’m going to vote for.”
Nadine certainly knows how to use her huge platform for the greater good. We salute!
Everyone knows by now that Nadine is poised to make an acting comeback with a Viva Films-produced thriller entitled Greed. In fact, she was preparing for a lock-in taping during her podcast guesting. Is she passionate about acting? Nadine shared that acting is something she’s truly passionate about now but she didn’t always feel that way.
When she was younger, she approached acting as something she had to do to earn. Now that she’s older, she admits wanting to stray away from the lovey-dovey portrayals and try “crazy roles like action and thriller” films. Exactly why she’s excited to film Greed since it’s something new to her.
Everyone knows which breakup she’s talking about.
“It took me a while before I got over it,” Nadine admits. “It,” of course, being her three-year relationship with singer-actor James Reid. “I was pretty much in limbo for more than a year.”
Nadine and James announced their breakup last January 2020, devastating news that heralded an even more devastating year. Nadine, who is only human, admitted that she had a rough couple of months after the fact.
During her months in “limbo,” she became comfortable enjoying her own company. She did things on her own that she couldn’t before when she was in a relationship. That meant finishing an album (Wildest Dreams), writing more songs, cooking, doing flower arrangements, painting, and of course going to the beach with her friends.
“I guess one [piece of] advice is to take your time. Wounds won’t heal that easily,” says the actress. “It will take time [to move on] but it’s super worth it in the end.”
Nadine also admitted that there were times where she thought maybe her relationship could still work out, something that a person normally goes through after a breakup. But as the days wore on, she found that she could breathe again and spend longer times without thinking of that person.
“[There are times I thought this feeling] can’t go away because I still want to be with this person,” she said. “But one day I woke up and told my friend that ‘You know what, [the feeling is] not there anymore.'”
During that year she spent on her own, she took the time to reflect on the things she did and the person she’s become. President Nadine is obviously a staunch supporter of improving oneself. She shared that before she was able to truly move on, she had to realize that she needed to put herself first.
“A lot of people think that when you’re with a partner, you always have to grow together. There’s that mentality. But in reality, you also have to grow individually,” she shares.
Focusing on your growth also means realizing you have the power to direct your life wherever you will. To echo a powerful quote she dropped in the interview, “This is my life. I’m in charge of it.”
And that’s how we know we “elected” the best president ever.
