8 Easy-to-Keep New Year’s Resolutions Other Than Starting a Diet and Saving Money

Jan 3, 2022   •   Kyzia Maramara

Exercise. Go on a diet to reduce weight. Save money. Build a better budget. These are just some items you probably already have on your list of annual resolutions which you may or may not keep until the magic of the New Year fades. (That always falls around February). So if you need ideas for year-round doable New Year’s resolutions for 2022, we’re here to help. Include these easy-to-keep goals on your list this year.

1. Use up your vacation leaves for actual vacations

Don’t be afraid to file those leave credits and take a break from work. And by break, we don’t mean sneaking email replies throughout the day while you sit on the couch and contemplate a Netflix series. Go out! Book a room at a resort, spend time out of town with your friends to refuel your creative juices, or even go sit by the park and read a book. Maximize that vacation with a change in scenery and whatever you do, don’t work.

2. Avoid leaving messages on read or unread

It’s not a crime to fall off the face of the earth and respond to messages two weeks later but it is good practice to inform people about what’s going on. You could simply and honestly send them a message with an explanation that you’re not in the proper state of mind to speak with them. Leaving people on read could come across as rude but if you tell them you’ll get back to them soon, any decent human being will understand. It shows that you respect them and their time. We promise, no one will come after you for telling them you’re not in the mood to talk to them (unless you say it in a bad way).

3. Cook something new every two weeks

Let’s be honest, cooking something new once a week could be too much of a commitment. Once every two weeks is perfect — it’s totally doable. 2022 is the year where you brush up or build your cooking skills. No matter how convenient it is to tap a few buttons and get food delivered straight to your doorstep, it’s also quite draining for your finances. Take this opportunity to also whip yourself healthy meals that will go perfectly with your 2022 exercise and diet resolutions.

Limit social media use

Ever find yourself at 2 AM, doom scrolling while switching through three social media apps and complaining how you can’t sleep? That’s one bad habit you need to break for 2022. Make it your resolution to cut your social media time and spend it on other things of value instead. Play with your pets, for example, or develop a new hobby. Social media these days is nothing but negativity, toxic debates, and the shiny lives of your friends you’ll be tempted to get jealous of. Free yourself from all of these.

Spend more time with friends and family

How ironic is it that even though most of us are in lockdown together with family, we don’t get to spend time with them as much? Granted, we’re all rooted to the same office chair slaving away at work or school. Make the extra effort to connect with your friends and family, even if for some that means via video call. You’ll be surprised to know how uplifting it is to spend even just half an hour talking about nothing or unloading your burdens.

Prioritize your mental health

A lot of things fall under this broad New Year’s resolution. It could be cutting off toxic people from your life or saying no to things you know you can’t handle. It could be taking care of yourself by logging off social media for the weekend or getting 8 hours of sleep. If there’s anything 2020 and 2021 taught us, it’s that if we can treat others with kindness, we should treat ourselves the same too. To be strong outwardly and slay your tasks, you need to fortify yourself inwardly first so don’t be afraid to prioritize your mental health.

Read more books

Not everyone is a fan of reading books but it’s a hobby that’s proven to help you grow and learn, not to mention add to your vocabulary. Why should you read books? Self-made millionaires and uber-successful people such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Elon Musk are all bookworms. They read an average of 50 books per year! “Every book teaches me something new or helps me see things differently,” says Gates in a TIME Magazine interview. “Reading fuels a sense of curiosity about the world, which I think helped drive me forward in my career.”

Start by reading for 30 minutes a day and build it up to an hour a day. From there, you can challenge yourself to read one book a week. You can even sign up for websites like Audible if you prefer audiobooks. Check our list of non-fiction reads if you’re not sure what to start reading.

Create a cleaning routine that works for you

Cleaning your space is probably one of the most tedious chores for adults. But that’s only because you probably decide to clean it once a month when the dust is an inch thick and the mess is knee-deep. Make it a resolution to clean your house regularly this year like the responsible adult you are. Break your chores down to make it easier: Make your bed every morning. Wash your dishes immediately after and don’t let the kitchen get cluttered. Give away clothes you haven’t worn in six months. Heck, you can even buy a vacuum cleaner to make sure you clean the floor every week. A clean space can reflect your peace of mind so get cleaning!
