It is not easy to have a sober discussion about the recent shooting in Orlando. It’s easy to get emotional, or to politicize it, or to paint with a brush too broadly—and it’s even easier to say the wrong things and hurt the people who were affected by this tragedy even more.
What cannot be denied is this: Orlando was an act of evil and absolutely reprehensible, and is something we condemn. Given the nature of the discussion, though, each point will be preceded by a completely unrelated cute video, so you can just look at the cute videos and completely ignore the text if you’re not inclined to read something this heavy, because there’s no room to make jokes at the moment.
This has been the worst terrorist attack in America since 9/11, and it’s chilling that it happened because someone needed to work his own gender issues out. The killer, apparently, while enraged once when he saw two men kissing, was a regular in the gay club he shot up, and even used gay dating apps.

While it’s true that it isn’t Islam on its own to blame for what happened, it cannot be denied that Islam played a role. We can pussyfoot around it all we want, but it is definitely a factor. Why do you think the countries most oppressive of the LGBT tend to be Muslim countries, with very few exceptions?

On the opposite side of the political spectrum, if anyone thought that gun laws had nothing to do with this shooting, they are just as naive. Why would it be easy to purchase an assault rifle in this day and age? Who needs one for self-defense or “protection?” As always, the answer to both Islam and gun laws as factors in the shooting lie somewhere in between, and not in either extreme on the issue.
And just so we make sure people don’t forget, this is what casual homophobia and all those stupid “no homo” jokes end up leading too. We are led into a culture where people feel it’s actually praiseworthy that someone shot up a gay club, solely because they’re gay. It’s chilling how people can be that callous, but there you go.
