While Christians have mostly been more tolerant of homosexuality than Muslims, let’s not forget people who remind us that the scriptures say gays should be put to death, but conveniently forget about adultery while they go back to their mistresses. Shame on these bigots, all the same. You just got your wish.
But enough of the blame. Where do we go from here? Do we just tighten up club security and then call it a day? Or do we need to take a stand beyond our Facebook statuses and Tweets to show that no, it’s not okay to hurt people, and especially not solely on the basis of which kind of consenting adult they want to go to bed with at night. This is the reason why gay pride is a thing: because when showing who you are can be enough reason for you to get shot in the face, that definitely takes a lot of courage to say.
The Philippines has its share of hate crimes against homosexuals, too, and we need to call attention to that. Will our next president end up more like he is when he speaks up, or when he makes laws for his city? Now is as good a time as any to push for the long-awaited anti-discrimination law that covers sexual orientation.
This was the deadliest mass shooting in US history, and we’ve averaged almost one a day over there. There are so many factors at work, certainly, and there are so many personal, business, and political interests in play whenever people try to do something about it, and everyone just quietly forgets about it until the next horrible tragedy happens, which, at this rate, could very well just happen tomorrow.
As Filipinos, it isn’t our place to discuss US policy or relations with Islam, obviously. But it is very well within our power to look at ourselves and understand that the things we believe about other people guide how we look at them, and if our religion ends up teaching us to hate these people instead of loving them, then we need to look long and hard at what we are learning from our faith instead of embracing that hatred.
Or, we could just embrace the hate and be assholes, too. Our choice, really.
