To all the single ladies who don’t need a man to make them whole, St. Emily is your queen bee. At the age of 15, her father took it upon himself to find her a suitable husband. He became angry when Emily flatly refused to marry because she knew that she wanted to be a religious sister and give her life to God.
Alas, not all of us choose to don the habit, so we need St. Emily’s guidance to help us focus on more important things like building a career (or raising a child for single mothers). Chat with her to resist chauvinists and your distant relative who keeps on asking “bakit wala ka pang asawa/boyfriend/irog/sinta?” With her guidance, you’ll be able to say “I am my own woman” with conviction.
Of course, if you’re ready for a lovelife, St. Valentine is just as easy to send a prayer to.
Don’t worry guys, you’ve got St. Benedict Joseph Labre on your side. Basted? He will give you comfort. Torpe? He will give you encouragement. Single for any other reason? He understands you. From a man who repeatedly courted his maiden–priesthood–only to have all his attempts rejected, St. Benedict Joseph Labre got your back, bro.
Maybe the girl you like is just praying to St. Emily and you need to focus on yourself. Pray to him and he will guide your bachelor life.
Now, to those who are single not by choice, but by, uhm…difficulty in attracting the opposite sex, St. Drogo is your divine intervention. In this day and age where looks are the number one factor for survival (thanks to social media and the increasing number of shallow people), dating is hard. It is especially harder if the only genes you got are recessive ones.
St. Drogo was stricken with a disease that caused physical deformities. He was so unspeakably repulsive that the townspeople were frightened of him, so they built a cell to lock him up where he only lived on water and holy Eucharist until the day he died.
So if you’ve got face that could sink a thousand ships, no worries. Say a little prayer to St. Drogo and maybe he can intercede for you to find beauty out of the ordinary. He is also the patron saint of coffeehouses, so keep that in mind the next time you meet your Tinder date at Starbucks.
Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without our very own Saint Pedro Calungsod. At a very young age, his role in the Spanish mission of converting the Chamorros in Marianas Island (now Guam) to Christianity made him a martyr. Amidst all temptations on the island, he persisted to do the work of the Lord, as he believed that this was his calling.
We have trials to face as the youth of this nation, and the big responsibility of being its steward falls on our laps. Just talk to kuya Pedro and he’ll inspire you to be a full-functioning and productive young citizen of this country.
