Bolivia’s internet infrastructure is hugely undeveloped for their needs. Due to the high prices of internet connections only 5.4 % of Bolivian homes are online compared to the South American average of 42 %. It’s much like the Philippines, where some people need a computer shop to access internet – much to the dismay of the screaming gamers in the building.

Paraguay can be happy that their internet speed has been climbing on the Akamai charts in the past couple of years. In 2012, it was reported that Paraguay’s internet speed spiked up 715% after 4 years. Now that’s called progress, and that’s a page the Philippines can take out from Paraguay’s book.

Internet usage in Venezuela is popular only among the youth, and the educated –a small portion of their population. Due to their poor infrastructure, their internet service would be flatteringly described as languid.

We may be third world but we are heavily dependent on the internet. We use it for entertainment, travel, socializing, politics, ego tripping, dating and bashing. It’s even rumored that some Filipinos actually find it useful at work. And we manage all that with a service rate 6 times slower than Venezuela’s. Even if we tripled our internet speed, we’d still be just half as fast as the world’s second slowest. Put another way, we’re a far, far second to the second slowest. Metaphorically, if Venezuela is a turtle, we’re a lame snail sliming through wet cement. How else can I put it? Oh, let’s just cry. Post a selfie later.
