Being in a relationship means letting another person into your life, someone who’s privy to your thoughts, space, and everything you do. For some, that’s a responsibility they aren’t ready to pounce on, never mind the benefits (companionship) being in a relationship could provide. You’ll hear this answer more often from independent folks who are comfortable enough in their skin to the point where they don’t need to rely on anyone else.

Jumping into a relationship while you aren’t stable mentally, emotionally, and financially puts you at risk of hurting yourself and your partner. Trust us (and this Redditor), there’s nothing more hurtful and tiring than letting someone into your life while you’ve got different goals and priorities.

Getting out of a toxic relationship leaves wounds, and it takes a long time for those to heal. Those who get out of particularly bad ones might be scarred for life and choose to remain single forever. Although sad, this is a pretty valid reason to say goodbye to dating and romance.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve got yours from watching green flag K-drama and rom-com leads — your standards are standards for a reason. Establishing a romantic relationship with someone because they showed the slightest interest in you, but don’t tick your checklist is the quickest way to get your heart broken. So what if no one fits your high standards? Nothing is better than settling.

For some folks, it has to do with going with the flow. If they don’t have a partner yet, that’s cool. They’re enjoying being single and working on themselves. If someone comes along who makes them want to be in a relationship, then that’s also a great “add-on” to their life. But regardless, they’re happy because they know how to be content with being alone.
