Don’t Throw Away Your Parcel Pouches, Plastic Bags, Bottles, etc. — Donate Them Here Instead

Jun 16, 2021   •   Kyzia Maramara

Online shopping and buying grocery is fun until you see all the waste you need to dispose of and you start feeling guilty for planet Earth. Did you know Pasig River recently drew international attention as one of the top 50 most plastic polluted rivers in the world? Eighteen other rivers in the Philippines were part of the list by Rotterdam-based environmental organization Ocean Cleanup. But as grim as that list is, there’s still a chance to turn things around. It’s a good thing there are a lot of organizations that help recycle plastic waste. You can donate your plastic waste to these organizations:

The Plastic Flamingos

The Plastic Flamingos (also called The Plaf) is a French social enterprise that started a project in the Philippines back in 2018. Their goal was to “tackle marine plastic pollution by collecting and recycling plastic.” According to The Plaf, the Philippines is part of the countries responsible for 60% of marine plastic pollution along with China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

You can donate all types of plastics clean and dried and donate them to more than a dozen The Plaf drop-offs in Metro Manila. They also offer pick-ups with a charge of P300. As for mailing in your plastics, you can reach out to the contact person at the drop-off nearest you. The plastic you’ll be donating will be recycled for emergency centers, piles, and pontoons.

Green Antz Builders

Green Antz accepts clean and dried plastics from water bottles to plastic utensils. They don’t accept PVC materials, PPEs, and other plastics like tarpaulins, styrofoams, and e-waste. To donate your plastic waste, you can follow them on Facebook to get updates on where they will be doing drop-offs next.

Green Antz uses eco-friendly practices and green technologies to provide building and housing solutions. The plastic waste you donate will be used to build new homes, isn’t that cool?

Green Haven Scrap Materials Trading

Green Haven Scrap Materials Trading accepts plastics, papers, and other recyclables such as Tetra Pak, cardboard boxes, and even old clothes. To donate, you can send your items via courier to their drop-off addresses in Sampaloc, Malabon, Valenzuela, and Cavite. To get the exact address, contact them at 0932 371 5141 and 0922 850 7700. Follow them on Facebook for updates.

SM Malls Plastic Waste Collection Program

SM Supermalls’ Plastic Waste Collection Program was launched early this year at SM Megamall. They managed to collect 461 kgs of soft plastics, 54.5 kgs of PET plastics, and 26 kgs of polystyrene foam. You can drop by bins and donate your plastic waste such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, sachets, and even small tires.

The initiative has since been launched at SM Mall of Asia, SM North EDSA, and SM Fairview. You can expect other SM malls to follow suit in the following months. Follow SM Cares on Facebook for updates.

Planeta Cares

If you live in and around San Antonio, Pasig, you can drop off your plastic wastes at Planeta Cares for their Basura to Ayuda program. They accept clean, washed plastic, eco-bricks, beverage cartons, and even used oil in exchange for ayuda of 1 kg rice (for BSA residents only). Planeta Cares also accepts bokashi-ed kitchen waste, bokashi being a process that ferments organic matter.

Their dropoff points are at Megaplaza Rolling Stores and BSA Urban Garden. Follow Planeta Cares on Facebook and Instagram for updates on when they will be holding Basura to Ayuda programs.

JuanBag

Gather your plastic bags, bubble wraps, mailers, and pouches and schedule for a JuanBag biker to pick it up. JuanBag uses these plastics to weave them into new packaging materials. Send them a message on Facebook for a door-to-door pick-up schedule.

My Basurero

My Basurero is a project by Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. The project collects your household waste, construction and renovation debris, and garden waste. They’ve got drop-off points in Brixton, Pasig and Quezon City Hall Park and Lagoon. Every kilogram of waste you donate earns you “EP” or “environmental points.” You can use these to redeem products from My Basurero’s mobile platform. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram for updates.

Your own barangays and local government units

If drop-off points are far from your location or you don’t have the budget to send your waste via courier, you can ask your respective barangays and LGUs if they have recycling programs. The Municipal Government of Los Baños recently started a pilot testing for their Plastic Waste Recovery Program. If other LGUs followed suit, we could reduce more of our plastic waste in no time.
