We’re sure Project Hail Mary was on many people’s watch list (including ours!), and we get why. And when we saw the film ourselves, the experience only reiterated why many viewers were eagerly waiting for it.

Based on Andy Weir’s novel (who also wrote “The Martian”), the film follows the scientist-turned-teacher Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling), who becomes involved in a world-saving mission after it’s discovered that some space life form is devouring stars (including our sun) except for one. There, he meets an alien life form on a similar mission and develops a friendship with the alien he names Rocky.
It’s been a while since a sci-fi film has received so much acclaim among critics and audiences, and upon seeing Project Hail Mary ourselves, we believe it’s well-deserved.
At a little over two and a half hours, the film is long, but it hit just the right pace that we didn’t even notice the time flying by. The back-and-forth between the present in space and the flashbacks of life on earth maintained a strong momentum, keeping us engaged throughout the film.

Gosling as Grace is effortlessly charming, even if all he does is talk and joke in his video logs, then talk more and let Rocky make fun of him in his video logs. Even if it’s just him on the scene, Gosling proves he can capture our attention with his charisma and skills even alone.
The graphics in this film are just as impressive. From the ship’s interior sets to the fantastical space walks, everything was simply gorgeous. And Rocky has us nearly convinced he’s real; that’s how good the digital work is.

There were so many times we wanted to go back and replay some scenes, which just made us realize we need to rewatch to catch all the details we might’ve missed.
Yes, this is one of those movies you can’t miss seeing. It’s definitely worth watching again and again and again. It’s fun. It’s entertaining. And it has heart. It’s the type of film that you go to the theaters for and come out being in awe at the goodness and potential of people.
It’s the type of sci-fi film that deserves a spot with the greats like Interstellar and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Project Hail Mary is, as Rocky says, amaze amaze amaze.
