Who doesn’t love a good acronym? After all, these are meant to be fun ways for us to memorize all sorts of information like how to stay safe during a pandemic. However, one Quantum Arcade branch seems to have had a little too much fun with using an acronym and the Internet isn’t impressed.

A Reddit user posted photos of the electronic sign on r/Philippines while asking Quantum Arcade to “get better acronyms.”

“Avoid touching MEN. Instead, follow WOMEN,” read the sign. It was definitely made to pique everyone’s interest. But if they don’t stay long enough to find out what that bizarre statement means, the message might be a little different.

It turns out MEN stands for Mouth, Eyes, and Nose. Meanwhile, WOMEN meant Wash your hands, Obey social distancing, Mask up, Exercise and eat well, and No unnecessary crowding. Isn’t that such a brilliant acronym? /s

“I can understand the humor in the signage but how will my daughter understand this when she first reads the sign?” reads another comment. “Quantum is forgetting that a big part of their target market is still at a very impressionable stage. I want my daughter to grow up understanding the value of equality and equity and subliminal messaging like this, even if unintentional, is not the right way to go. For that reason alone, Quantum gets none of my money.”

Apparently, it isn’t new

A Redditor pointed out that the weird acronym isn’t a Quantum Arcade original. In fact, it started in the Middle East in 2020, during the height of the pandemic. A viral tweet from a student showed a presentation slide with the phrase “Avoid touching MEN. Instead, follow WOMEN.”

If you think Quantum Arcade’s acronym is bizarre, you haven’t heard of BLOWBAGETS. Back in 2012, the Philippine Information Agency decided Pinoys needed an easy way to remember driving safety tips in time for Holy Week long drives.

BLOWBAGETS stands for Brake, Lights, Oil, Water, Battery, Air, Gas, Engine, Tire, Self. It sounds practical enough but we’re all aware of the attempt at creating an eyebrow-raising double meaning.
