Recognized as one of the hunkiest actors in the country, Jake Cuenca can now add the Best Actor Award to his fame. His performance in the film Mulat (Awaken) earned him the acclaim from the World Cinema Festival Brazil 2016 on May 28. Mulat is the same film that won him his first international award at the International Film Festival Manhattan (IFFM) in 2014. Along with Jake, the film’s Filipino director, Diane Ventura, also won Best Narrative Feature and Best Director for a Global Feature at the IFFM 2014.
The young child star whom most indie film fans recognize for her role in Ang Huling ChaCha ni Anita and Cinema One’s Hamog couldn’t contain her triumphant glee, being the first Filipino (and a young one, at that) to receive the Screen International’s Rising Star award at the 15th New York Asian Film Festival on July 1. Therese is thrilled to have been recognized internationally, as it’s like a lifetime achievement award, especially at the ripe young age of 15. She will bring her mother as her guest to awards day.
JLC has done it again. Adding to his list of achievements, John Lloyd has become the first Southeast Asian Star Asia awardee at the 15th New York Asian Film Festival. He has proved time and again how versatile and great an actor he is. He’s one of three honorees of the award, along with Hong Kong’s Miriam Yeung and South Korea’s Lee Byung-hun.
Aside from John Lloyd and Therese, Filipino artists Sid Lucero, Gwen Zamora and Annicka Dolonius, stars of Apocalypse Child, will also grace the said event.
Jaclyn Jose overwhelmed the international award body, Cannes, through her performance as a poverty-stricken mom who was forced to commit crimes in Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’ Rosa. She is the first ever Filipino and Southeast Asian to win the Best Actress title, hence dominating headlines and stealing the limelight at awards night with her proud Filipino speech last May 22. But not only is Jaclyn proud of this feat, she is more than grateful to have shared the moment with her daughter, Andi, who co-stars with her in the film.
