With TikTok videos taking off and paving the way to the popularity of vertical videos, there’s no wonder why other social media apps — like Instagram — are following suit. But let’s be real (pun intended), creating a Reel in-app is still quite difficult with limited editing options, and making them on a different app is the better option. If you’ve been getting into the short video format life and want to share more, take your Reels to the next level with these editing apps:
CapCut
With Capcut, you have access to free basic video editing functions such as trimming, splitting, shortening, and merging videos. Here are its unique features: text-to-speech, background removal, auto-captions, and motion tracking. You can even use the chroma key function to remove specific colors from videos.
Did you know that this app has a desktop version too? If you want to begin the vlogger life, you might want to install it on your laptop too.
Dazz Cam
Dazz Cam isn’t really a video editing app; it’s a photo editing app that will allow you to apply or take film-like photos. Film photography has become so expensive (as a hobby) these days and this app is the next best thing. Sure, there are film filters you can apply to your clips in video editing apps but Dazz Cam just has the ~authentic~ camera and video options. If you’re the type who loves Reels that are a compilation of photos, you’d love this app.

VN Video Editor
There are loads of free video editors but end up having a surprise in the end: your file will have that annoying watermark once you download it. VN Video Editor doesn’t have that! You’ll also have access to free non-copyrighted music, sound effects, stickers, and fonts. You can easily import materials you already have as well, in case you find fancy fonts and the like while looking for inspo online.
Canva
Yes, you heard it right. Canva has a video editor too, aside from its popular photo editing and pubmat-making options. Just like its popular free design options, you also have access to video templates you can easily edit to your own liking. Whether you’re creating Reels to document life or make informative videos, you’ll find a template for you. The drag-and-drop function is still one of its best features!
VLLO
If you love making daily life videos, VLLO is the app for you. All you need to do is import your clips and you’ll have access to a variety of editing functions and free assets from music to fonts. There are more options with its in-app purchases but the free version has a wide selection of assets already. P.S. it doesn’t have a watermark on exported files and lets you save your video in different qualities, and video sizes.
InShot
Even before the popularity of Reels, you probably already know InShot. It’s just that well-known video editing app, whether it’s for applying a watermark to your concert fancams or editing school requirements. Apart from having no watermarks when you export videos, InShot also has a library of free music, text and fonts, filters and effects, and fun transitions.
FilmoraGo
If you’re not new to video editing, you probably already know the desktop app Filmora By Wondershare. This is its mobile version and it also offers an intuitive timeline, which will allow you to manage multiple overlays. Some cool key features include over 600 templates, speed control, chroma key, custom text, transitions, and featured music.
Lift: Story Maker
Unlike the other apps we suggested, Lift: Story Maker is a free app that is dedicated to making reels and insta stories.
