Rekta sa Kalye Music Festival: Everything You Need to Know About the OPM Stage

Oct 19, 2023   •   Meryl Medel

The world of Original Pinoy Music (OPM) has gotten so much bigger now with unwavering support from fans whether artists are playing a small gig or performing on wide concert grounds. But all OPM artists had to start someplace, with some performing in the shadows before they became household names in the industry. One of those is through the help of Rekta sa Kalye Music Festival.

Rekta sa Kalye Music Festival

Rekta sa Kalye (RSK) is a team of underground artists who built a movement out of a passion to support each other as underground local hip-hop performers. As a small movement in 2017, they found their humble beginning in the bustling streets of EDSA. Later on, the local movement grew throughout Metro Manila, establishing networks built on a shared interest in the underground hip-hop community. Thus, the growing connections continued even beyond the metro, and RSK has further established itself strongly among artists from the surrounding regions.

“It started out sa pag open ng mga streetwear, barber shops or ano mang businesses, then na-invite kami sa Hydro Manila, House Manila and then barangay fiesta and bar events which inspired us to do event doing videos using phone,” shared the RSK founders.

ICDYK, Pinoy hip-hop sensation Al James (best known for “Pahinga” and “Pa-Umaga”) got his first exposure at RSK busking sessions. Artists like Because, Just Hush, and Kiyo also started out at RSK and their subsequent success was largely attributable to those heady, carefree beginnings from sneaking to train stations and performing on the streets. Even rap legend Gloc9 has been there since the beginning of RSK’s journey.

Rekta sa Kalye Music Festival

As part of an initiative to spotlight not only mainstream but also rising artists, RSK is holding the Rekta sa Kalye Music Festival this 18 November 2023 at the CCP Concert Grounds.

The music festival will serve as a platform for both established and emerging names in the OPM scene to be able to share the same stage and showcase their talents equally.

Rekta sa Kalye is known for its awesome artist curation that delivers a diverse range of artists from nostalgic and established to emerging and trendy. Both the younger generations as well and the Titos and Titas of Manila can definitely have a fun time at the music festival.
