Netflix and Chills 2021: Spine-Chilling Films and Shows to Watch for a Spooky Halloween

Oct 30, 2021   •   Meryl Medel

Instead of the usual Netflix and chill, the streaming platform is bringing you both chills and thrills for the spooky season. Call from beyond the grave? An unknown entity inside your house? A psychopath disguised as a mysterious woman? Netflix has got it all for a hair-raising, door-locking, keep-the-lights-on time this Halloween. Just make sure you’re not streaming these films and shows all alone.

There’s Someone Inside Your House

Based on Stephanie Perkins’ best-selling novel of the same name, this film adaptation follows high school senior Makani Young, who has moved from Hawaii to the small town of Nebraska to live with her grandmother and finish her education. But as graduation nears, her class is talked by a killer out to reveal their darkest secrets, shake up the status quo, and terrorize the whole town. The film is produced by the same team behind Stranger Things and The Conjuring Universe. Watch on Netflix.

Fever Dream

This is a story of two young mothers, one a visitor and the other a local. The visitor lies dying far from home, while a boy sits beside her. She is not his mother, and he is not her child. But together, they tell a haunting story of obsessive jealousy, an invisible threat, and the power and desperation of family. Watch on Netflix.

Night Teeth

College student Benny is a simple guy working as a chauffeur at night. But when he meets and picks up two mysterious girls for a night of party hopping, his entire world is turned upside down. Now with the women’s true nature revealed and the doors to their dangerous underworld opened, he must fight to stay alive. Watch on Netflix.

Hypnotic

For a while now, Jenn has been feeling stuck both personally and professionally. She turns to a renowned yet mysterious hypnotist for help. But after a handful of intense sessions, she realizes she might have signed up for more than she bargained for. Watch on Netflix.

Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight (Part 2)

In the continuation of the Polish thriller film, it’s hard to say who the real monster is. Adrenalina camp seems to have ended, but the real danger is only just arriving. Young and lonely policeman Adaś is simply looking for his place in the world, but things take an unexpected turn when he finds himself in the woods. Watch on Netflix. See the first part here.

The Chestnut Man

After a horrifying murder is reported, two detectives head to the crime scene only to find a creepy figurine made of chestnuts. In breaking down this creepy clue, they find evidence connecting the case and the killer to the missing daughter of an esteemed politician. Watch on Netflix.

Midnight Mass

From the creator of The Haunting of Hill House, the series tells the tale of a small, isolated island community on Crockett Island, where miraculous events and frightening omens alike occur after the arrival of a charismatic yet enigmatic young priest. A religious fervor takes over the almost-dead town, but is all really as it seems? Watch on Netflix.

A Tale Dark & Grimm

Worried the kids in the house would be too scared for the films and shows above? Netflix has kid-friendly offerings that still give a lil bit of spookiness! In A Tale Dark & Grimm, Hansel and Gretel walk out of their own story to find a better life and better parents (ones who won’t chop off their heads!). They end up entering other classic Grimm fairy tales and in a winding and wickedly witty tale full of strange — and scary — surprises. Watch on Netflix.

Bonus

Here are other films and shows released earlier this year, in case you’ve missed them!

  • The 8th Night
  • A Classic Horror Story
  • Army of the Dead
  • Awake
  • Brand New Cherry Flavor
  • Things Heard & Seen
  • Ghost Lab
  • Kingdom: Ashin of the North
