Attention all Marvel fans – the wait is almost over; Secret Invasion, is about to make its Disney+ debut! 8List was able to get a sneak preview of the first two episodes, as well as get some insights from the series’ cast and crew. Here’s a spoiler-free look at what you can look forward to
Though set after Antman: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Secret Invasion picks up the storyline that Captain Marvel left. The show offers a well-balanced mix of action and suspense, featuring some familiar faces like Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Furry and Colbie Summers as Maria Hill.
The Skrulls
It follows the Skrulls, a shape-shifting alien race, as they infiltrate Earth and pose as members of everyday society. Since the events of Captain Marvel, the Skrulls have split into two opposing factions. One wants to forcefully take over the earth for themselves, while the other seeks peaceful coexistence with humans. This thrilling narrative not only showcases the Skrulls’ complex culture and traditions but also offers a deeper look at the MCU’s vast lore.
Secret Invasion not only delves into the Skrulls’ invasion of Earth, but also brings to light one of Marvel’s most enigmatic characters: Nick Fury. The narrative peels back the layers of Fury’s past, revealing his innermost thoughts and personal struggles as he grapples with the aftermath of “The Snap”. So how does Samuel L. Jackson feel about removing some of the mystery surrounding his character?
“Well, the more you find out about [Nick Fury], then the more you’re gonna like him,” said Jackson. “The more I like him… It’s, you know, it’s just, you know, peeling the onion and having a good time.”
If you’re a fan of the Winter Soldier (who isn’t?), then Secret Invasion will be a treat. This series offers an immersive spy-thriller experience that’ll leave you at the edge of your seat. Though the show has a slow-burn pace, the air of mystery surrounding the Skrulls and their motivations will keep you hooked as you try to piece together the narrative. And with each episode, the web of intrigue and conspiracy only deepens.
“We love to do different genres for everything,” said Kevin Feige. “This was an attempt to really dive back into things we touched upon in The Winter Soldier… but hadn’t in a while, and really delving into the tone of a spy show. And seeing a very different dynamic between Fury and Talos than we had seen in sort of our ’90s buddy action movie Captain Marvel.”
One of the standout performances in the show so far is undoubtedly Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, the Skrull commander who we first met in Captain Marvel. Mendelsohn has always brought a certain level of charm to his villainous roles, and his performance in Secret Invasion — as one of the good guys this time — is no exception. His character’s arc is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing aspects of the entire series, and we can’t wait to see where it goes.
The cast has also seen a new addition in Emelia Clark, who plays Ga’ia, the daughter of Talos. We last saw her character just as a child in Captain Marvel, and there will be some interesting father/daughter storylines based on just the first few episodes. We can definitely expect her to bring a lot of interesting dynamics to the show. Also joining the cast is Olivia Colman, who plays Sonya Falsworth — an MI6 agent hunting down Skrulls.
From what we’ve seen in the first two episodes of Secret Invasion, it’s safe to say that the series is shaping up to be another fantastic addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Boasting a fresh cast of characters, compelling storylines, and a stellar ensemble, this show is one Marvel fans definitely won’t want to miss out on.
