8 Signs You’re Doing Better Than You Think You Are

Jun 17, 2021   •   Kyzia Maramara

Whenever we’re feeling down in the dumps, we tend to focus more on our mistakes and shortcomings. It’s the negative stuff that gets magnified, it bounces around in our head. It’s even amplified when we scroll through our social media timelines and see other people doing better than us. But what really is the standard for someone “doing better”? We’re here to remind you today that you might not know it, but you’re doing better than you think you are. And if you forget why somewhere along the way, let these 8 things remind you:

You’ve got food on the table

You don’t worry about where to get your next meal or what to feed you family and that means you’re already doing better than you think you are. If you ever catch yourself planning what to cook for dinner while you’re still eating lunch, that means you’re all set. It might not be a lavish meal, it could just be canned goods or pritong isda, but it’s enough to make sure you don’t go hungry when many people are.

You have a job

Not to invalidate your strong negative feelings (if any) for your current job, but you have to realize how lucky and blessed you are to still have one. When the pandemic started, millions of Filipinos lost theirs and had a tough time making ends meet. But you’ve got a stable one and you get your salary like clockwork every month. That’s definitely one huge sign that you’re doing better than you think you are!

You paid the bills this month

And since you have a job and a salary, you have the capacity to pay your bills. Now that you’re an adult, you know that bills are no joke. How our parents managed to pay them off while raising us, we’ll probably never know. But give yourself a pat on the back for being a responsible adult because your bills are paid.

You’ve got friends and family to lean on

When things get tough, you know you’ve got your family to help you out and maybe one or two close friends to confide in. These are people who are willing to weather with you through it all — both the good and the bad. You’re never really alone and that’s why you’re doing better than you think you are.

You get to wake up every day and pursue your passion

Isn’t it ironic that the thing we take for granted are the things that are most important? When was the last time you appreciated the fact that you get to open your eyes every day? You’re doing better because you’re alive and breathing. Otherwise, you won’t be able to see your loved ones, get to work, dive into your passions and do more. And even if you’re in the depths of despair and you think you’ve got nothing going on for you, the fact that you’re alive counts for something — it means you can still get to change your path in life.

You get to care for your physical health

With the pandemic hitting the world hard the past year, we were reminded that we are fragile human beings who need to take care of our health. You probably have health insurance or HMO. And even if you didn’t, you still have the money to get checkups and buy medicine. The bottom line is, you’ve got options for healthcare and that’s a good thing.

You have time to do what you love

via GIPHY

You’ve got time to spare, whether you’re spending it on a hobby or just simply lounging around the house and spending an hour deciding what to watch on Netflix. Free time for relaxation is a huge blessing in the middle of the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

You’ve hurdled challenges

via GIPHY

Finally, whenever you’re tempted to wallow about your shortcomings in life, think back on all the times you’ve successfully worked around your problems. Life might have thrown you curveballs but you dodged them all in the past even though you totally thought you couldn’t. Look back and see how far you’ve gone — that’s exactly why you’re doing better.
