It only feels like yesterday that we’ve entered a new millennium, and now people born in the early 2000s are turning 20 and most 90s kids are at the marrying age. Even songs that seem to have been released only last week are now actually 20 years old, and you’ll even realize some artists you’ve been listening to have now been active for 20 years. So if you want to bask in nostalgia (or maybe feel your age), listen to these 8 songs that are now 20 years old (or give it a go at the karaoke).
This Beyoncé hit was released as the lead single of the singer’s debut album. Until now, fans consider this a classic Queen B song, and for good reason. Though it would definitely make you feel your age, because it even talks about pagers, which some Gen-Zs don’t even know about.
Another debut single, this song by rock band Evanescence gained international recognition after being included as a soundtrack in the 2003 film Daredevil. For most Pinoys, this song is definitely a karaoke staple.
After their previous album didn’t do so well commercially, “Where is the Love?” officially put the Black Eyed Peas on the map. This song is the lead single from the hip hop group’s third album, as well as the first song that featured Fergie as an official member. It’s also a Grammy-nominated song, receiving recognition under Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
A single from their debut studio album, this classic rock hit was one of the first songs the Killers ever wrote. It gained recognition as “Song of the Decade” from UK radio stations Absolute Radio and XFM, while Rolling Stone included it in its “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list. And of course, it’s another Pinoy karaoke favorite.
The main single from their 2003 album Bigotilyo, “Mr. Suave” became a massive hit, turning into a mainstay in the charts for a year and even being adapted by TV commercials and political campaigns. There was even a film made based on the song starring Vhong Navarro.
After winning the Star for a Night singing contest at age 14, Sarah Geronimo immediately debuted, with one of her singles being “Forever’s Not Enough”. It was also nominated as Song of the Year at the 2004 Awit Awards, albeit it lost to Parokya ni Edgar’s “Mr Suave.”
In case you didn’t know, this song is actually a cover of Steve Perry’s original song. It was included in Nina’s debut album after producer Ricky R. Ilacad was impressed with her demo version. Nina’s rendition became a regular radio listen, even topping the charts for four weeks.
Also known as “Biyahe”, this song is a local adaptation of the theme song popularized by F4 from Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden. It quickly became popular as it allowed fans to sing the original tune with lyrics that they understand.
