8 Space-Saving and Tipid Items to Have When You Start Living on Your Own

Feb 23, 2021   •   Kyzia Maramara

Getting your own space and moving out of your parent’s house is a giant leap into this crazy thing they call adulting. You’re finally ready to make your way into the world alone and it’s exciting. But during the first few months reality will catch up and you’ll realize living alone is not as rainbows-and-butterflies as it might have seemed. For starters, it’s financially draining if you’re not prepared for the rental fees, bills, and overall cost of living. Aesthetically, you might also find that it takes a ton of effort (and money) to make your nook look similar to those Pinterest boards you saved on your phone. But there’s no rush! You’ve got the rest of your life to figure things out. To help you with a seamless transition, check out these space-saving and tipid items you should 100% have at your new place.

Space-saving storage boxes

Limited space means every square inch of the room is precious real estate you wouldn’t want to be robbed from. Instead of having huge cabinets and drawers, switch it up with space-saving storage boxes. Some can even be used as chairs! You’d be surprised to know how much space you can save with dual-purpose items.

Vacuum cleaner

Via Shopee

Move over Swiffers and regular walis, the vacuum cleaner is here to take over your jobs. The sucking machine does what it’s supposed to — vacuum every speck of dust in every nook and cranny of your small apartment. Take a deep breath and breathe in that clean indoor air. Get one that can reach your ceiling to vacuum the heck out of those cobwebs because we all know if you’re living alone, you don’t have your parents reminding you to clean the ceiling too. Once you’ve felt the feeling of power at the palm of your hand that comes every time you plug that vacuum cleaner, you’re never going back.

Clothes steamer

Tight space? Ditch the traditional iron and ironing board, get yourself a steamer instead. It removes the wrinkles and kills most germs living in your clothes. But you have to keep in mind that certain fabrics (suede, plastics, etc.) are not suitable for steaming and will probably melt if you try it on them.

New furniture? In this economy? We’re going for the economical and sustainable route, thank you very much. You can lurk around Carousell for basically anything you need but if you don’t find it there, Facebook groups are the way to go. Aside from Facebook Marketplace, there’s Manila Furniture Buy and Sell, IKEA Philippines BUY, SELL, SWAP in Manila, and Declutter Manila. If you’ve got the money to fill your space with brand new furniture, go ahead and do that, but these FB groups and pre-loved furniture could save you lots of cash.

Disinfectant and cleaning solutions

Stock up on bottles of Lysol and Kurin water. Lysol helps disinfect your house (and Lazada/Shopee orders) from the potential spread of COVID-19 or other virus and Kurin water keeps your area clean — from the kitchen to the bathroom. Kurin All-Purpose Spray effectively cleans, degreases, sanitizes, and deodorizes any part of your home you spray it on — no more scrubbing tables and leaving them icky with dirt. You should also stock up on Baygon Roach Killer unless you want to spar with the insects in the middle of the night.

Rice cooker, induction cooker, mini-refrigerator

Cooking is a basic survival skill and you need to learn how to cook if you’re living alone. That is unless you prefer eating fast food every day. Get yourself an induction cooker so you won’t have to haul tanks of gas back and forth. Usually, first-time space owners are a little short on stove space. It’s either the kitchen countertop can only fit one stove or they’re using a basic induction cooker with room for only one. Getting a rice cooker can speed up your meal prep. If you’re creative, you can even cook ulam and dessert in it. If your space doesn’t already come with a refrigerator, invest in one.

You should also remember to invest in induction appliances to save your electricity bills in the long run. They might cost a little bit more upfront but they do keep you from shelling too much cash every month.

Air fryers deserve a category of their own. By now, you probably know that air fryers are the is the newfound weapon of choice for millennials. It fries, it bakes, it cooks, and the best part is it does all that minus the ton of oil and the oily pans to wash. It’s healthy alright, and it cuts in half the amount of time it takes to cook any meal. Not to mention it’s a huge space saver and you wouldn’t need to wash the oil splatters off your countertop. Pop your solo breakfast, lunch, or dinner in one of these air fryers and wait for it to ding. Check out cool air fryer accessories too while you’re at it.

Sofa bed

Via Shop SM

It’s all about dual-purpose furniture if you’re planning on living alone in a small apartment. Sofa beds are as straightforward and as space-saving as they can get. You could also opt for a mattress on the floor but a bed that converts into a sofa makes sure you’re comfortable any time no matter what you’re doing. You can get one from SM online or you could also browse Shopee for affordable ones.
