There’s a lot to love about Emily in Paris but today we’re only thinking of one thing — Sylvie Grateau and her devil-may-care boss extraordinaire attitude. Played by 58-year-old actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Sylvie is an icon in more ways than one. And because Emily in Paris has been greenlit for Seasons 3 and 4 following the success of Season 2 last December, we’re hoping this Parisienne Girl Boss gets more screen time. Why? Well…
Warning: Spoilers!

American boss Madeleine Wheeler (Kate Walsh) isn’t afraid to drill it on everyone’s brains that Savoir is a subsidiary of the Gilbert Group in America. And it is, sure. But who would want a heavily pregnant lady to throw that at your face every day, right? Not to mention take up space in your own office without permission. Granted, there are too many shady things Sylvie has done at Savoir — including not raising the retainer fees of their biggest client, Maison Lavaux, just because she was the owner’s mistress. And since it is a marketing firm that thrives on making money, Madeleine is right that Sylvie needs to correct her mistakes. But Sylvie is just that Girl Boss who would rather cut ties with a company she loves than be ordered around by an American.
To prove that she doesn’t need Westerners bossing her around, Sylvie takes the reins on her career and starts a new marketing company. But she doesn’t just leave Savoir, she takes all the employees with her. Of course, by “all” employees we just mean Luc (Bruno Gouery) and Julian (Samuel Arnold) since everyone else is nameless and faceless background actors anyway. When Sylvie told Madeleine of her plan, we can’t help but cheer when the latter was too stunned to speak. Now that’s how you make a Grand Resignation Plan. We bet Emily in Paris Season 3 sees this woman building her own empire.
NGL, we thought her relationship with photographer Erik DeGroot (Søren Bregendal) was going to be a short-lived fling but they actually pulled through to the end. Of Season 2, that is. However, not without bumps and hurdles along the way. Erik wanted a serious relationship with Sylvie, something that surprised her since she intended to keep him a secret. What can we say, society doesn’t deal well with huge age gaps in relationships and Sylvie has always been afraid of letting people in on her personal life. But in the end, Sylvie realized that Erik is the Real Deal and she can deal with the haters and the judgemental people, because who cares?
In Emily in Paris Season 1, Sylvie was established as this hard-as-nails lady who has the gall to be the mistress of a very much married Antoine Lambert (William Abadie), owner of Maison Lavaux. What can we say, the woman does what she wants. But after realizing that Antoine will always choose his wife over her and is actually content with keeping her his dirty little not-so-secret, she realized her own worth and left the toxic relationship. Good for her.
Surprise, surprise. Sylvie is actually married. We’re as shocked as Emily (Lily Collins) was when she found out. She is in a long-term marriage with St. Tropez beach club owner Laurent G. (Arnaud Binard). They’re not your regular couple, they’re a *cool* couple. Married on paper in a marriage-of-convenience and a you’re-my-comfort-zone-I-can’t-divorce-you type of way which, if you think about it, is pretty sweet. Sylvie and Laurent get to go on with their lives and hide their wedding rings. They’re good friends who support each other. When Leroy-Beaulieu was asked about the relationship, here’s what she said: “Her husband is like a brother who she doesn’t want to let go of. She really needs him. I feel she’s always going to have him as a brother, as a friend, as whatever.”
We can’t miss this number. While Emily’s outfits are a hit-and-a-miss throughout both seasons, Sylvie has managed to look sleek, elegant, and expensive all the time. She’s not only a feisty woman who gets the job done, but she shows up for work looking like the part too. Emily can wear loud, frilly outfits (which could turn cartoonish for the most part) while Sylvie keeps it on the down-low but manages to keep that mature and powerful Parisian style. Honestly, she’s a better style icon.

No one would say that Sylvie hates Emily even though the latter sometimes does get on her nerves. Their relationship is a strong mentor-mentee type with Sylvie hurling challenges at Emily knowing she’ll overcome them. And if she can’t? Sylvie is there to make sure she learns where she went wrong and to put her in her place. But their relationship extends outside the realm of clients and projects. Sylvie advises Emily to live a little while she’s in Paris: “You’ve got the rest of your life to be as dull as you wish, but while you’re here fall in love. Make mistakes. If you’re going to do Paris for one year, for God’s sake do it right.” It’s exactly the push she needs in the right direction.
Adults are kings of looking like they know what they’re doing but in reality, they’re really just figuring things out every step of the way. We’re willing to bet Sylvie is too. But she doesn’t show it which makes her a Cool Girl icon. She isn’t afraid to call the shots and stomp her way confidently through life. She busts out the two-piece bikini and has her slow-mo James Bond moment coming out of the water in St. Tropez (that body!). She confidently corrects an unassuming waiter who mistakes Erik as her son by kissing him on the mouth in public. Best of all, she walks out of Savoir with her head held high knowing she’ll be alright.
Think of her however you want to but we all know she’s one of the most loveable characters in the show anyway. Without Sylvie, no one will put Emily in her place or make Savoir half as interesting a workplace as it is. In fact, without her presence, Emily in Paris will go from an 8 down to a 4 real quick. She brings life to the show and we’re forever lamenting how her screentime will never be enough. At this point, just give us a spin-off of Sylvie in Paris and we’re probably going to binge that faster than we did this season. Anyway, here’s to hoping there’s more of Sylvie in Seasons 3 and 4.
