As the May rains pour in, Japanese boy group &TEAM follows with their latest comeback, “Samidare.” Their first single was released on May 8 and is their third comeback. It was accompanied by songs called “Maybe” and “Scar to Scar”.
The lyrics of “Samidare” or “May Rain” alone will have your eyes drizzling as they tell the story of people’s changing, causing them to grow apart. You can feel the narrator’s sadness as they long for the days before they changed, but you can also feel the hope in their hearts.
To match the sad but hopeful lyrics, the nine members grace us with smooth and feather-like dance moves that represent their sorrow and hope.
Aside from the song, a music video was released with it. What stands out is the blue colored scenes present throughout the video that shows the sadness of the song. The aesthetic changes to a brighter, warmer light, showing the hope of the narrator.
The music video also has a story based on their webtoon, “Dark Moon: The Grey City,” in which the members, as werewolves, grieve the loss of their leader after defeating vampires. In the story, this is represented through the grave they are lying down on in the opening scene and the cross with “Giri” written on it.
With the storyline, the members needed to bring their A-game in acting, which they did. Eldest member K proved his king-level skills by acting sad and grieving Giri’s loss. He also showed the burden his character has as the next pack leader. &TEAM’s leader, EJ, also led the group with his top-notch acting. While watching, you can feel his frustration as he lies on the floor and frustratedly slams his hand.
“Maybe”, the second track, was a pre-release that came out last April 28. The ballad and its track video also give the same longing and hopeful vibe that Samidare has, but it is a sadder song. The song talks about two people drifting apart but the singer reassures the person they are always here and will continue to fight for them because they believe they are the one.
The third track, “Scar to Scar,” is a hard rock song that motivates you to keep going even if you fall and get scared. The song also talks about how the members can go through anything as long as they are together. The upbeat, fast tempo gives you enough energy to push through and keep going after you have been hurt.
Along with the comebacks, &TEAM released fan chants for both “Samidare” and “Scar to Scar.” Samidare’s fan chant sounds lighter and sweeter, which complements the song. The chant also reminds both &TEAM and Lunés that we will always be one. Meanwhile, “Scar to Scar” has a rougher, faster tone, where you almost rap and scream every response as well as the members’ names.
