After a loooong time, The Flash is finally out in theatres, and yes, everyone wants to know if it’s worth a watch, especially considering the controversy surrounding the movie’s lead star, Ezra Miller.
Let’s preface this by saying that we won’t be making any value judgments about the lead star, much less the willingness of people to separate the art from the artist so they could watch this film. So with that in mind, is the movie good enough to stand on its own despite its troubled lead star?
The answer is a resounding yes, and here’s why (without spoiling anything the trailers didn’t already show)!
People looking forward to the next era of DC’s movies under James Gunn will definitely want to see this film as it bookmarks the end of the Zack Snyder era, but clearly sets up a transition for what’s about to come. It makes any DC fan hopeful for the future.
We all know that this film is going to be a huge sendup to some characters we all know and love, and these people who aren’t Ezra Miller absolutely deserve their time to shine. If you liked the kind of fanservice No Way Home gave every Spider-Man fan out there, then this is more of that for DC’s movie fans.
Come on – the time heist in Avengers Endgame was just pure joy, right? Well, we all know by now that The Flash is all about time travel and the multiverse, so this movie is more of that. As long as you remember this isn’t a movie gunning for Oscars, you can enjoy the film for what it is – a spectacle. And it’s really good at that.
Probably the most underrated Batman on the big screen, Ben Affleck never got a fair shake as the caped crusader thanks to some baffling choices during his tenure. Nonetheless, he more than makes up for it here.
How many takes are there on Flashpoint by now? There’s the original comics, then there’s the animated film, there’s the Arrowverse version, and now this. Despite that, each version absolutely has its own merits, and this one adds to the package in a way that only the movies can. Will we see Grant Gustin? Sorry, you gotta watch the movie to find out for yourself.
Without spoiling who it is, this movie’s big bad isn’t a first-timer. And the big bad was great at it the first time around, so their second run at it is more of the same.
This isn’t a secret anymore, and everyone just wanted to see him don the cape and cowl one more time. It was absolutely worth the wait.
DC’s superhero films aren’t known for always doing this unlike Marvel, so it’s important to note that yes, there’s something to look forward to even after the film’s runtime is done.
Setting aside the question of Ezra Miller, yes, The Flash is a popcorn flick that is well worth the price of entry. While it’s never going to be on the level of the best of these comic book flicks, what it brings to the table is more than enough to give us a hint of what’s to come for DC, and a beautiful send-off to the eras that preceded it.
