Okay, this surprised nobody. Not only is Overwatch insanely popular, the other contenders, though critically acclaimed, didn’t stand a chance and that’s coming from a writer who loves all of them. It’s the uplifting message from Blizzard that stood out, though. Ray Gresko said Overwatch’s positive reception was, “[A message] about heroism, diversity and a bright and positive and hopeful future. These are all things we believe everyone needs.”
EA and Bioware announced that new gameplay footage for the next Mass Effect at The Game Awards and boy did they not disappoint. Five sweet minutes featuring conversation, investigation, combat and even crafting and exploration that puts No Man’s Sky to shame. And the biggest brag? A nearly legally binding disclaimer at the end of the footage that reads, “Captured In Engine. Representative of Game Experience.” Bold words, Bioware.
Truth be told, the biggest moment of The Game Awards 2016 was at the top of the show: The Industry Icon Award, which was given to Hideo Kojima. While not everyone may be a Metal Gear fan, Kojima remains an inspiration for his visionary style and his incredible humility. The grace he maintained throughout his troubles last year made him a model for industry cool. “Last year, I thought I lost everything, but I didn’t lose anything. I thank all of you, I thank all of you for your support,” Kojima said. “I love this world, I love you all from my heart.”
