Actress Toni Gonzaga released on YouTube her cover of Katy Perry’s hit song “Roar.” The video, uploaded on May 25, 2022, quickly garnered reactions on other social media platforms and it isn’t because of the cover itself. Netizens reacted to one particular line in the song after a news outlet highlighted a particular line with a screenshot. Which line? Well…
Gonzaga released the cover accompanied by a black-and-white music video of her recording it at a studio. It looked simple enough until News5 posted about the cover on social media to share the good news with everyone.
News5 took a simple screenshot: the part where Gonzaga sings the line “I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything.” It was also accompanied by an informative caption that prompted readers to recall how Gonzaga sang “Roar” during sorties for the BBM-Sara tandem.
The video was uploaded on the same day Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte were proclaimed as the president and vice president.
“The SHADE news 5, the shade,” one netizen commented.
“I see what you did there. Nice one, News5,” said another.
The majority of netizens in the comments section seem to agree that News5’s whole post had a “panalo caption.” As of writing, that specific screenshot has garnered 65k reactions and 13k shares with 2.1 comments. Take a look at some of them:

Over the past few months of the election 2022 campaign period, Gonzaga and her husband Paul Soriano have faced heavy criticism from the public for supporting Marcos Jr. and Duterte. Gonzaga hosted a few UniTeam rallies while Soriano filmed UniTeam campaign ads. Many netizens expressed their dismay at the couple’s political stance, which has also led to strained relationships within the entertainment industry.
Netizens also poked fun at Gonzaga’s song covers during UniTeam rallies. Aside from “Roar,” she sang Sia’s “Titanium” to entertain UniTeam supporters and hype them up.

Gonzaga and Soriano were present at Marcos Jr. and Duterte’s proclamation at the Batasang Pambansa plenary hall. Marcos Jr. introduced Gonzaga to his mother, former First Lady Imelda Marcos. “Kawawa ito, binubugbog siya (sa social media) pero hindi tayo iniwanan,” said Marcos Jr. as heard in the video. He also proudly introduced Soriano as the one responsible for all his political advertisements.
The actress later posted a photo of her and her husband with the president and vice president-elect.
