8 Toxic ‘Friends’ You Need to Leave Behind in 2024

Jan 2, 2024   •   Edgardo Toledo

One of life’s best things is having friends you can count on through thick and thin. But we’re also here to tell you that not all friendships are created equal. Thanks to their toxic traits, you’ve probably met people who’ve made you believe humanity is doomed. So, how do you keep the lousy bunch from ruining your inner peace? Let this Pinoy Reddit discussion guide you.

The ‘lulubog-lilitaw’ friend

At some point in our lives, we’ve all come across that mushroom type of friend. Much like mushrooms that only sprout when conditions suit them, they only pop up when they need something. But what about when you need them? Don’t hold your breath for them to show up, because they probably won’t.

The always disrespectful friend

Respect is the heart and soul of any friendship. So when your friend gossips about your problems or takes your stuff without permission, that might be a sign that you need to cut them out of your life.

It’s normal for friends to help one another. But things get tricky when your friends start keeping track, bringing up everything they’ve done for you during disagreements. What does this show? That what you believed to be heartfelt support wasn’t as genuine as you thought.

Two-faced friends aren’t the easiest to filter out of your social circle, but the moment you pinpoint who’s who, block them online and IRL.

The ever-envious friend

Your friends should be the people you can count on to cheer for you and applaud your achievements. Sadly, there are friends who lowkey pray for your downfall. Their souls are just filled with jealousy and hatred, ready to pounce at any opportunity that’ll keep you from winning.

The friend who always laughs AT you, not WITH you

Some friends make insensitive jokes due to a genuine lack of self-awareness. Though that’s problematic, they can learn – we just need to be patient and be transparent with our feelings. What’s not okay, however, are friends who have zero compassion for the emotions of those around them. They’ll say or do whatever they want, regardless if it hurts their friends.

The parasite friend

Some so-called friends have mastered the art of being parasites — literally. Planning a trip? They’ll only join if you shoulder their expenses. Asking them out for a quick coffee run? You’re treat! Thinking of going out and shopping with your BFF? Oh, that’s on you, too. These parasitical friends won’t stop leeching until you’re left high and dry.

The self-centered friend

One reason some friendships turn sour is people who can’t help but shift the spotlight to themselves when their friends are talking about their struggles. They love to chime in with “Eh ako nga…” and turn what should be heartfelt conversations into a one-man show, (starring them, of course).
