It’s a fast-paced world we’re living in and whether you admit it or not, we often overlook true rest. We hate to break it to you, but rest is more than just sitting on the couch scrolling through 200 TikToks before you take your usual five hours of sleep. Before you dive headfirst into 2025, take a moment to assess your rest needs. Are you truly recharged, or just going through the motions? Here are eight different ways to recharge before 2024 ends and start the new year feeling refreshed and ready to conquer your goals.
Get some sleep. Passive physical rest means taking everything slow and listening to your body’s desires. Take a nap when you need to. Sleep for more than your average 6 hours. Take the time to stretch in the morning or get a massage you’ve always wanted. Afterward, take a warm bath and go back to your sheets. Admit it or not, these are what your body has been craving for a while now, so maybe it’s time to finally listen.
You don’t have to lift weights at the gym to get your body moving. Active physical rest can be gentle on the body but still get your muscles engaged and your blood flowing. Try more restorative activities like walking, yoga, or stretching. These will help improve circulation and flexibility and might improve your mood for the holidays too.
Creative rest is one of the best types of rest because it allows you to be curious and explore. If you’ve been in a slump lately, this will hopefully reawaken your creativity. Start reading a new novel, visit a museum, go for a walk, start painting, join a workshop, watch artsy films – the list is endles!
There’s no more straightforward way to put this – take a break. Take a break from thinking. You’ve already done plenty of that throughout the year. You don’t have to be doing something or thinking about anything all the time. Resting can also be doing nothing. Quiet your mind and reduce mental stimulation. Stare at the rays of the sun on the ceiling. Sit quietly and feel your body thrumming with energy. Spend time with nature. Take a rest.
Put your phone’s Do Not Disturb function to good use for the remaining days of 2024. Try your hardest to stop doomscrolling and switching between social media apps. A downside to having access to everything at your fingertips is that it stimulates your senses. You don’t know what to focus on. So try to unplug. Dim the lights, turn off your electronics, and find a quiet space to be alone.
The holidays are filled with year-end parties and reunions, and while that’s a great thing, it might drain your social battery. Prioritizing social rest is recognizing that sometimes you do have to take a break from socializing. Or maybe it’s finally realizing that there are certain people you need to take a break from, ones that drain your energy. From now on, choose to spend time with positive people who uplift you.
What a year you’ve had! Spend the last few days of the year reflecting on it and thanking God for carrying you through it all. Read Scripture, pray, meditate, spend time in nature – find a sense of purpose and belonging.
Let your emotions out. Express your feelings. That could mean having one good cry, journaling your heavy thoughts away, or talking to a trusted friend or therapist. However you choose to gain emotional rest, remember that processing your emotions is essential for your overall well-being. Allowing yourself to feel them is part of self-care.
