We Should ALL Listen to Vico Sotto’s 6 Points To Remember This Campaign Period

Oct 6, 2021   •   Meryl Medel

Pasigueños (and non-Pasigueños alike, TBH) rejoiced when Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto filed his certificate of candidacy to renew his term as mayor in the upcoming elections. “Di naman kailangan ng drama at suspense,” the mayor even joked when he announced his filing of COC. Many netizens praised his work during his term and said they’re looking forward to seeing him again as mayor in the next few years. Nearly a week later, another candidate announced their plans to run as Mayor of Pasig, and it’s none other than the current Vice Mayor Iyo Bernardo.

For those who don’t know, Iyo Bernardo has served as vice mayor for three terms already, which means he cannot run as vice mayor anymore in the next elections. Bernardo said that he is running for the position of mayor because he didn’t see an improvement in the quality of life in Pasig during the pandemic, i.e. during Sotto’s term.

Upon receiving this news, Mayor Vico Sotto gracefully and succinctly delivered 6 simple points to remind supporters, voters, and fellow candidates about what we really need to consider during this election period:

#1 Focus on what’s important

Sotto pledges to focus on work and to continue fulfilling his duties as mayor. “Trabaho, bago politika. Kahit sa pormal na campaign period, mananatili akong full-time mayor.”

[1/6] FOCUS pa rin tayo sa trabaho. Trabaho, bago politika. Kahit sa pormal na campaign period, mananatili akong full-time mayor.

#2 Avoid “mudslinging”

The mayor dissuades voters from “mudslinging” or the act of using personal attacks, insults, and accusations to damage the reputation of an opponent. In the simplest words, he wants them, especially his supporters, to be the bigger person and engage in proper discourse instead. He encourages his supporters to properly analyze the accomplishments and track record of each candidate in the running: “Dapat naman talagang suriin nang mabuti ang mga kandidato.

#3 Stay vigilant

Jumping off from his previous point, Sotto encourages people to stay vigilant against fake news and evaluate “quotes” and “news pieces” before believing anything. It’s important to recognize which sources can be trusted and to filter what comes into your newsfeed, especially if social media is your primary source of information. The mayor adds an aside, saying that those spreading fake news in the 2019 elections are still that now. So don’t believe hearsays and be critical of everything you read and hear before taking them as truth.

— Vico Sotto (@VicoSotto) October 6, 2021

#4 Convince, not dictate

Got a relative or a friend with an opposing view? Sotto says engage in healthy discourse with them instead of scolding or threatening them. That wouldn’t help. It’s better to work on convincing them and layout proper facts and research than to just tell them they’re wrong. He reminds his supporters that this is exactly one of the things he wants to remove in political spaces.

#5 Follow Comelec’s rules and protocols

Sotto also reminds voters and supporters alike to follow all rules and protocols of the government organizations, most especially health protocols. We’re still in a pandemic after all.

— Vico Sotto (@VicoSotto) October 6, 2021

#6 Budget wisely

Finally, Sotto promises to spend as minimal as possible in the upcoming campaign period, just as he had in his run in the 2019 elections. The Pasig mayor is big on transparency, which he has consistently delivered throughout his term.

me agreeing and following vico’s 6-pt reminder eventho im not from pasig https://t.co/vPhNIYPnK8

Some believe that challenger Iyo Bernardo shot himself in the foot after criticizing Sotto’s mayoral term, when many Pasiguenos have attested to seeing changes in the city during Sotto’s term despite the challenges of the pandemic. A few, in particular, have praised the improvement in Pasig’s healthcare system, which is much needed during this health crisis.

Anong not yet improved? The fact that Vico has been focusing his energy to continuously improve the healthcare system during this pandemic in Pasig is an improvement already.

but if there was one thing we should thank vico for—it’s opening our eyes to what kinda governance we deserve. can’t wait for him to run for a national seat. but for now, hanggang inggit muna ako sa pasig. HAHAHA.
