Where to Order Sushi Bake, The Internet’s Latest Food Craze

Jun 2, 2020   •   Ina Louise Manto

The period of quarantine has given birth to new chefs and bakers. There have been a number of quarantine food crazes that dominated the internet over the past months, including dalgona coffee, sourdough bread, and ube-cheese pandesal. You’ve probably seen a new favorite the past weeks and it’s dominating all over social media: sushi bake.

What’s Sushi Bake?

Who would ever want to bake sushi, right? Sushi Bake isn’t an entirely new recipe, with one video tutorial dating back to 2015. But the hype seems to only have grown locally now as more people look for dishes to try at home. Sushi Bake is basically a deconstructed sushi arranged in a dish then baked for a few minutes. It’s not a hand roll nor a casserole but one thing’s for sure: it’s a bite of creamy and tangy goodness in one roll. What makes it fun to eat is its unconventional take on the usual rolls of sushi: it’s baked, you scoop it yourself, and wrap it around a sheet of nori. It gives a DIY feel, which is always fun! Plus, there are endless combinations: from the most basic maki to spicy tuna with cream cheese.

Check out these stores where you can order sushi bake in Manila:

The name says it all — it’s the original. Celebrity nail artist Mimi Qiu Reyes is the first to sell sushi bake in the country. On an Instagram post, she shared that she began making the creamy dish in 2015, and it’s become a birthday party staple since. Mimi started selling her addictive creation to local celebrities in April, and she’s been on a roll (pun unintended) since then. Prices start at Php 800 for a small tray, which is good for 2-3 persons.
