“Good m*f—ing morning, b*tch!” is the first thing you’ll hear when you open Filipino-American social media influencer Bretman Rock’s Instagram stories. Born in the Philippines and now based in Hawaii, the 22-year-old star (yes, he’s only 22!) found himself in the spotlight when he started posting Youtube vlogs that showcased his colorful personality (and equally colorful vocabulary). He has since racked up millions of followers across all his social media channels, with many of his fans tuning in just to see the everyday life of Bretman Rock
His own reality TV show MTV’s Following: Bretman Rock recently premiered on MTV’s official Youtube channel. In the show, viewers can see a clearer picture of the star’s personal and family life while he tries to balance it with his public image. But no matter what kind of content he posts, we all know Bretman Rock has always been the Baddest. Here are all the reasons why.
Yes, if you’ve been curious about this, Bretman Rock is really named Bretman Rock. But his full name is actually Bretman Rock Sacayanan. His first name is derived from two wrestlers his father was a huge fan of: Bret Hart and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Yet, despite the fairly famous origin of his name, Bretman Rock has owned it and turned it into his own brand. Now, the name Bretman Rock can only be associated with the one and only baddest b*tch on the internet.
Bretman is openly gay. He was even featured on the cover of magazine Gay Times for their Pride Month issue in 2019. And he applies this openness about his sexuality in all aspects of his life. Which is exactly one of the highlights of his reality TV show.
“I have six friends, and four of them are gay and two of them are two girls,” he told NBC News in an exclusive interview. “So I honestly just grew up with, like, gay people, and like I grew up with my family [being] so accepting of gays. It was very important to make the show gay as f—, period.”
One of Bretman’s main goals in starring in the MTV show is to be able to provide representation on television to people like him. “I didn’t really see anyone like me on TV,” he said to NBC News . “I literally don’t even remember seeing any, like, gay Filipinos on TV until I started watching Drag Race and saw Manila [Luzon], and I was like, ‘Oh, my God! You look like me.’”
And it’s not just about queer representation. He also expressed his desire to represent immigrants like him and his family. He spent a large part of his childhood in the Philippines and only migrated to Hawaii when he was around 7 years old. Bretman wanted to show his own life to people all over the world and “represent . . . other immigrant kids coming to America with nothing but a dream.”
Bretman is extremely proud of his heritage. He wants to show the world how beautiful Filipinos are inside and out and to break people’s stereotypes on Filipinos. “I want to prove that Filipinos can do things just the same as others, if not better — and cuter,” he said to HelloGiggles.
If you’re one of Bretman’s followers on Instagram, you’ll notice that he posts a lot about his niece and nephew Cleo and Ezekiel, promotes his mom’s small business, and does a lot of projects together with his sister and fellow vlogger Princess Mae. In fact, it was his grandmother who pulled Bretman into the world of beauty when he was around 5 years old. “I knew I was going to love or be doing beauty when I would watch my grandmother get ready for church,” he told HelloGiggles. His mother supported his interest, letting him try on her makeup, which he said is something he would always be grateful for.
Aside from his makeup and beauty vlogs, Bretman became known the most for his hilarity. He’s the type of social media personality who feels like a friend you’re talking to everyday onscreen. And he’s also the type of person who can make you literally laugh out loud whenever he says something.
Bretman started with makeup, skincare, and beauty, but his content doesn’t end there. He delves into fashion, food, travel, and whatever floats his boat that day. As in, whatever. From pole dancing sessions to taste tests series to science experiments, Bretman has got a lot of content to offer you.
And for good reason! He has a lot of things to be proud of — from his good looks and his amazing sense of style to his badass personality and how much he cares for himself and others. He looks good dressing up in anything — and we mean, anything, as if he wants to tell the world and its gender norms to just f— off. More than that, he’s unafraid to speak out about things he feels strongly about. Case in point: when he said gender-specific clothing shouldn’t even be a thing.
But even before he skyrocketed to fame — when he had nothing but his dreams — Bretman has always been a confident bad b*tch like no one ever was. Bretman shared with Cosmopolitan how he used to be bullied in high school and how that hate continued even when he started creating content online. But he couldn’t care less anymore. “I just really don’t think about it like that anymore,” he said to Cosmopolitan. “I’m out here doing my thing and you’re out there doing the same shit you’ve been doing since high school. I should be laughing at you, but I’m too cute to laugh.”
No matter what he’s doing, Bretman has always been unapologetically authentic. He’s pretty open about almost anything. He can talk about his family, his friends, his pets, his daily routine, whether he had plastic surgery or not, what he’s having for dinner, and nearly anything under the sun (with a few exceptions like his love life and his emotions).
In fact, he insisted on filming his MTV show in Hawaii. “I thought it was so important to capture what my real life is because there aren’t many influencers in Hawaii — especially influencers that live the island life,” he told Nylon. And he does actually share more than he already does in his MTV show, like the behind-the-scenes of his nude shoot and some authentic heart-to-heart moments with his sister.
“I just hope that people can see themselves in me, and that’s really all I could wish for,” he said to NBC News. This authenticity is also probably one of his biggest draws. People like seeing the real thing. In fact, honesty is something people respect a lot about people. And he freely gives it. That’s exactly what Bretman Rock makes Da Baddest.
