8 People We Wish We Could Avoid at Family Reunions

8 People We Wish We Could Avoid at Family Reunions

Dec 25, 2023   •   Edgardo Toledo

Holidays are in full swing, and you know what that means –  family get-togethers. It’s always fun to catch up with relatives you haven’t seen in ages. Conversely, some ~*particular*~ relatives mastered the art of turning holiday reunions into a circus. So, is this article dedicated to them? That’s for you to decide.

The Drama Queen/King

Resident family drama queens/kings have a habit of creating or amplifying conflicts. They love exaggerating situations for attention, and their presence alone makes you feel like you’re walking on a minefield of potential conflicts. Why do they do this? We could blame it on them watching one too many soap operas, but some people just want to watch the world burn.

The Know-It-All

You can tout yourself as the most intelligent person in the world, but if that includes belittling people for not being as smart as you, you’re just some know-it-all who doesn’t have self-awareness or good manners. The saddest part? Know-it-all relatives also love hogging supposedly delightful conversations and asserting their hot takes in life that probably no one asked for.

The Constant Complainer

It’s okay to complain, but making it your whole personality is a surefire way to be banned from every family gathering. Let’s put on our honesty hats for a second, shall we? Nobody wants to be around with a constant whiner. They’re irritating, hard to please, and ruin the holiday spirit for everyone.

The Boundary Crosser

We know holiday reunions don’t happen that often, but it’s not a free pass for relatives to ask nosy questions or be inappropriately touchy. You just can’t shame someone’s weight or how single they are and expect a beso on the cheek. Relatives who misbehave should steer clear of the family table altogether.

The Silent Judger

Just because your relative’s intently looking at you doesn’t mean they love your OOTD — chances are they’re silently roasting your entire existence. You might even catch them throwing major discreet side-eyes or mean comments that are good enough to pass as compliments. Because inside their own little world, sila lang ang perfect.

The One-Upper

If you have an incredible story or a fantastic accomplishment that you want to share, save it until your family’s resident one-upper leaves because they’ll do whatever it takes to outshine you. This person treats everything as a competition, even if everyone’s probably just talking about what they had for lunch the other day. Kaloka ‘no?

The Chronic Gossip

It’s one thing to have a fun chit-chat and another to spread unfounded rumors about family members. Chronic gossipers revel in talking behind people’s backs and starting smear campaigns to put themselves in a good light.

The Forever Late

A family reunion won’t be complete without relatives running late or consistently canceling plans at the last minute. Nobody can force you to attend a family reunion you don’t want to. That’s fine. But for the love of people who made you feel welcome, be decent enough to tell them you’re not coming.
