Would July to Play Some Videogames?

Jul 20, 2019   •   Matthew Arcilla

E3 has come and gone, hyping us up for a whole slew of releases from today to next year and maybe even next decade in the case of those projects that take longer to develop than most. But that doesn’t mean there’s this month has been without its gems. Big Videogame drops a diverse set of releases this month with superheroes, Nazis, psychics, mutants and child soldiers. Did I say, child soldiers?

Here’re the eight top videogame releases for the month of July:

Sky: Children of the Light

Released July 11, 2019 for iOS. Android, Mac, PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at a later date.

The next game from fabled Journey developer thatgamecompany, Sky: Children of the Light has been billed by CEO Jenova Chen as a “romantic adventure game” in which you explore a fantasy world and solve puzzles with up to seven other players. The game arrives exclusively as a free-to-play release for iPhones and iPads but will come to other platforms at a later date.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

Releases July 19, 2019 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch

After nearly a decade, the Ultimate Alliance series returns with a brand-new installment. Although numbered as a third installment, The Black Order doesn’t follow on the continuity of previous Ultimate Alliance games. But it does offer the same co-op button-mashing gameplay that made them beloved, as well as an expansive roster of heroes and villains with more in post-launch DLC.

Beyond: Two Souls

Releases July 22, 2019 for Windows PCs via Epic Games Store

The merits of games produced by creative director David Cage at Quantic Dream are debatable but there’s no denying that Beyond: Two Souls is quite the curio. Originally released exclusively for PlayStation 4, this supernatural drama stars Ellen Page as psychically gifted young woman and Willem Dafoe as her parapsychologist father figure. Now it’s coming to the PC via the Epic Games Store.

Kill la Kill the Game: IF

Releases July 25, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Windows PCs

Based on the hit anime of the same name, this 3D fighter is filled with over-the-top action. The game tells the story from anti-villain Satsuki Kiryuin’s perspective, and is being branded as canon to the series. You’ll fight intense one on one battles to advance the mystery of the life fibers. Other playable characters include series’ hero Ryuko Matoi as well as Ira Gamagoori and Uzu Sanageyama.

Songbird Symphony

Releases July 25, 2019 on Windows PCs, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4

This adorable musical adventure combines platforming action, rhythm gameplay mechanics and puzzle solving to emulate the magical role music can play in a Disneyesque storytelling experience. Join Birb, a small, grey and white poofy chick who doesn’t seem to fit in with his family of peacocks as he leaves the safety of his nest in search of his real parents.

 Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Releases July 26, 2019 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch

The long-running and beloved tactical RPG series departs the Nintendo DS to debut on the Switch with Fire Emblem: Three Houses. This time around, you play a professor at the Officer’s Academy which provides instruction to the three student houses that represent the ruling nations of the continent. You’ll guide your students in both the classroom and on the battlefield.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Releases July 26, 2019 for Windows PCs, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch

Nineteen years after the events of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, legendary Nazi killer BJ Blazkowicz has disappeared after a mission into the heart of Nazi-occupied Paris. Now his twin daughters Jess and Soph have taken action to find him. Embark on the first Wolfenstein built with co-op action adventure. Team up with a friend or play alone.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Releases July 30, 2019 for Nintendo Switch

In this eerie post-apocalyptic role-playing game you lead a band of mutants exploring the discarded remnants of human civilization in search of a promised land. You’ll stalk in the shadows, scavenge for gear and take down roving bands of robots, bandits, cultists and ghouls. Filled with personality and atmosphere, Mutant Year Zero is a tactical game that challenges you to maximize every advantage.
