A British film set against the vast African backdrop, this Ford Brothers’ movie details the Homeric journey of an American serviceman trying to get home during the zombie apocalypse while an African soldier deserts the army to look for his son.
Billed as a ‘zom-com’ (zombie comedy), this movie is filmmakers Raj and D.K. attempt to translate a zombie movie to their cultural perspective. There’s more laughs than gore here, from the likeable stoner-buddis and their straight laced roommate to a fake Russian mobster who inadvertently creates a zombie army with a new drug.
The Japanese have their fair share of zombie movies, both over-the-top and slightly calmer fare. But between Hiroshi Shinagawa’s Yakuza vs. zombies flick Deadman Inferno and I Am a Hero by Shinsuke Sato, the latter does it better with its rendition of how the lack of guns and the hikkomori lifestyle would exacerbate a zombie apocalypse.
Sadly, this Cebuano indie flick by Brandon Relucio and Ivan Zaldarriaga had a limited run when it was released under Cinema One Originals. A realistic look at how a small provincial town would react when faced with the rising dead, it’s not surprising that our countrymen would first reach for religion, superstition, and folklore.
