The Moments that Made the 2020 Golden Globes One Heck of a Party

On Sunday night (Monday morning here in the PH), the world tuned in to see who would take home which award at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). While the main stars are the actual award winners and their acceptance speeches, there were a lot of moments in between that just made the show one hell of a party, staying true to its reputation as one of the more relaxed and casual events in Hollywood.
From host Ricky Gervais going too wild on his monologue to actress Patricia Arquette straight up calling out US President Donald Trump to the mini reunion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stars (and to more moments, because we could just go on and on and on), there are just too many highlights that we’ve had to list down our favorites.

Proving just how chill this award show is, Jason Momoa is here in a tank top. Yes, a tank top.
But okay, he actually gave his jacket to wife Lisa Bonet, which just proves that, in addition to having those fine arms, he’s also a damn fine gentleman. Who also distracted the audience, including Brian Cox who just wanted to get his award.

Everyone just fell in love all over again with Brad Pitt. Like, can you look at that face and not adore him? If his face isn’t enough, his sense of humor would surely get you. Teasing his co-star Leonardo “LDC” DiCaprio with a *Titanic* joke? Yes. Because duh, you should’ve shared that raft, LDC. And then poking fun at himself with a dating joke? (And Jennifer Aniston’s reaction!) We love a man who can take a joke.
And of course, he ends his speech to tell you to be kind. Because he’s that type of man. Heart eyes all over.

Awkwafina says hello to a Golden Globe for her role in “The Farewell”.
Hear her speech for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at The #GoldenGlobes. pic.twitter.com/BPpZT0Fr9J

It was a big night for representation. The Farewell star Awkwafina was the first woman of Asian descent to win the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical motion picture. When she dedicated the award to her dad and said “I told you I’d get a job, Dad”—damn, if that didn’t resonate with Asians all over the world.
Meanwhile, Parasite makes history as the first Korean film to be awarded with a Golden Globe. Director Bong Joon Ho shares words of wisdom that Hollywood (and the rest of the Western audience) should really take to heart: “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films . . . just being nominated along with fellow amazing international filmmakers was a huge honour. I think we use only one language: the cinema.” PREACH!
Anyway, we hope Parasite continues snatching all those awards. (Hello, Oscars!)

Incredible tribute to the career of the legendary Tom Hanks. #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/vUzY73SM9U

He’s been a mainstay in the film industry for many years, but Tom Hanks continues to make the audience adore him even more when he received the 2020 Cecil B. deMille Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” In his acceptance speech, he gets choked up while thanking his family. “A man is blessed with a family sitting down front like that. A wife that is fantastic in every way who’s taught me what love is, five kids who are braver and stronger and wiser than their old man is, and a loving group of people who have put away with me being away for months and months and months at a time. I can’t tell you how much your love means to me.”
There’s no crying in baseball, but there is crying during acceptance speeches.

Also, he just gave the Internet one of the first memes of 2020 with his reactions to Gervais’ monologue. Honestly, we’d like to send a card to Tom Hanks to say T.Hanks for all the new reaction memes.

— Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) January 6, 2020
Another constant in the entertainment world, Ellen DeGeneres was honored with the Carol Burnett Award for “outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen” and is the second recipient of the award, next only to Carol Burnett herself.
Comedian Kate McKinnon gave a heartfelt tribute before presenting the award, speaking about the impact of DeGeneres’ coming out on her show. “She risked her entire life and her entire career in order to tell the truth and she suffered greatly for it. Of course, attitudes change but only because brave people like Ellen jump into the fire to make them change. And if I hadn’t seen her on TV I would’ve thought, ‘Oh I can never be on TV. They don’t let LGBTQ people on TV.’”
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama goes to Joaquin Phoenix for “Joker”. #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/QCEAo33CYd
— NBC Entertainment (@nbc) January 6, 2020
While the Joker (2019) received much criticism, no one can deny that Joaquin Phoenix certainly delivered an award-winning performance. And award-giving bodies like the HFPA definitely knows this as a fact, even if Phoenix himself says, “We all know there’s no f—ing competition between us,” as a shout out to his fellow nominees.
Despite all these, Phoenix gets a lot of censorship due to swearing. And maybe because he called out too many things at once. Like his fellow celebrities who “take private jets” just to attend the awards shows. His words come from a good place, and this tweet sums it up:
Joaquin Phoenix is basically saying look at this room, look at the money, power and influence. Don’t ask regular people to make the changes you’re not willing to make yourselves. Too bad he’s so awkward and it didn’t come out like that at all.

Actor Russell Crowe also won big at the Golden Globes, snatching the award for Best Actor for Limited Series / TV Movie for his work in The Loudest Voice. But he wasn’t there to receive it. Because he is back in his home down under, doing what he can about the Australian fires. Actress Jennifer Aniston reads his poignant acceptance speech in his stead, “Make no mistake. The tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique & amazing place it is.”

Despite Gervais hitting the audience about not making any political speeches, that didn’t stop anyone. Especially Michelle Williams. In light of the absolute mess the current US government is in, she urges her fellow women to exercise their right to choose.
“Women, please vote in your own self-interests. It’s what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them. Don’t forget: we are the largest voting body in this country. Let’s make it look more like us.” And honestly, we stan harder than ever.
