Myspace Is Making A Comeback? Here’s What We Really Want From Social Media Right Now

Aug 13, 2026   •   Andy Flores

After a failed attempt at relaunching Myspace in 2013, current owners Tim and Chris Vanderhook of Vian Technology are eyeing another comeback for what was once the world’s biggest social media platform, as teased in the Tommy Avallone documentary titled Myspace.

“We still own Myspace. We are stewards of the Myspace brand at this point, and we are going to relaunch Myspace. We’re just waiting for the right time to do it,” the Vanderhook brothers said in the documentary, adding, “And if that one doesn’t work, we’ll do it again.”

News about the possible return of the social network site spread lightning fast on the internet—the very space it used to rule—with millennials, fatigued by the current state of social media, welcoming both the idea and the nostalgia.

After all, for those who considered Myspace their online sanctuary for self-expression and connecting with like-minded people, the customizable profiles (which, BTW, is where we got our earliest HTML and CSS experience!), friend-ranking feature, and everyone’s first friend, Tom (Anderson, the platform’s co-founder), are very much missed.

More than nostalgia, though, the excitement over Myspace’s second comeback speaks volumes about how many social media users are unhappy with the platforms available to them today.

So, what do we really want from social media right now? Here’s our wishlist, in case the Vanderhook brothers are reading:

Basic user interface and experience

The OG Myspace existed before the age of AI, so it didn’t have a complex algorithm that forced engagement and automatically curated a feed for each user. Instead, it banked on simple structural elements and user-driven design that naturally made each user profile unique.

With feeds so saturated with overstimulating content, perhaps a basic UI and UX are what we need right now.

No Generative AI

We do not need to see another sloppy video generated by wasting gallons of fresh water on our feeds! We do not need another social media platform to urge us to try its built-in gen AI feature and contribute further to the destruction and depletion of natural resources.

We’re not here to be environmental terrorists. We just want to post unfiltered (or heavily filtered) mirror selfies and tell our friends about our day.

No payments and subscriptions

Why do we have to PAY to increase our profile’s security, use extra features (that are unnecessary in the first place), or gain extra characters for our post? Running a tech business sure is tough, but in an ideal world (apparently, the past), using social media should be free.

Customizable profiles

They say the customizable profiles (slow loading time from unmanaged HTML) are among the things that killed Myspace along the way. But we want it back! The glittery layouts, the music that automatically plays in the background, the quirky cursors, the neon headers—these are every digital maximalist’s dream, and somehow, we’d love to see them again. We can’t believe we traded all of these for the boring layouts we have today.

Less ads

Again, running a business is tough, and ads will be needed to keep the platform going. That’s okay, but geez—can we NOT have one ad every other post from a page we don’t even follow? Keep ads in a separate section or something. Don’t let it rule our feeds!

Functional search feature

Social media has evolved into an archive of sorts, but of what use is it if the search feature is busted? Lately, these search bars don’t serve their purpose. They are fetching results irrelevant to the query, including ads we don’t want to see.

Feeds that follow a chronological order

Our feeds are a mess now. It’s a hodgepodge of posts from strangers, viral videos, and poorly targeted advertisements. We barely ever see posts from our real friends, and if we ever do, the post is from a couple of days ago! If Myspace is really making a comeback, they better give us a simple feed with posts organized chronologically.

Make social media social again!

Social media just doesn’t feel “social” anymore. It’s become a blatant money-making vehicle where people rarely post about their lives anymore. Why? Because social networking platforms have strayed way too far from their initial purpose of keeping people connected! Maybe this is what Myspace should really work on for its return. Bring back the fun as well as the genuine connections that social media used to foster.
