Black Panther Makes History

It was one of the biggest films of 2018, and Black Panther continues on its success this year. The Marvel blockbuster is nominated for Best Picture, the Academy’s highest accolade, and is the first superhero film ever to be  nominated. The film is also nominated in six other categories, including Best Original Score.

Bradley Cooper Got Snubbed

A Star Is Born was expected to dominate this year’s Academy Award nominations, and dominate they did, earning eight nominations including Best Picture. What’s surprising is that the film’s director, Bradley Cooper, got snubbed in the Best Director category. Bradley, Ben Affleck welcomes you to the club.

Netflix Wins Big

Netflix has already changed how we watch TV, and it seems like it’s bound to change the movie world too. The Alfonso Cuarón film Roma is nominated for Best Picture, a first for the streaming giant. The film earned 10 nominations, including Best Director and Foreign Language Film.

No Love for Female Filmmakers

Well, there’s no surprise there; The Academy once again snubbed female directors and a total of zero women were nominated in the Best Director category. Last year, Greta Gerwig was nominated for her film Lady Bird, but for this year no woman got the nod, even though a few films directed by women got nominated in other categories.

Spike Lee’s Long Overdue Nomination

Spike Lee got snubbed almost 30 years ago for directing the critically-acclaimed film Do the Right Thing, but it seems like The Academy is now ready to recognize the director. Lee got nominated in the Best Director category for his film BlacKkKlansman, a nomination he rightfully deserves.

‘Burning’ Left Out in the Foreign Category

One of the best-reviewed films of 2018 was Burning, the South Korean film starring Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) and is based on a Haruki Murakami short story. It was the first South Korean film to be included in the shortlist of The Academy Awards but unfortunately wasn’t nominated in the Foreign Language Film category.

The Internet’s Boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet, Snubbed

Another surprising snub was Timothée Chalamet, who didn’t get a nomination for his portrayal of a drug addict in Beautiful Boy. Chalamet got rave reviews for his role and was tipped to get a nomination in the Supporting Actor category, but sadly the young actor ultimately got snubbed, and the internet is outraged.

Still No Recognition for Asians

The Academy pushes for diversity, but blatantly snubbed Asians for this year’s awards show. One of the biggest films of 2018 was the all Asian-led Crazy Rich Asians, which at least got a nod at the Golden Globes, but got zero nominations from The Academy.
