8 Local Love Teams We’d Like to Star in a Movie Again

Jun 17, 2019   •   Kyzia Maramara

Before JaDine, LizQuen, and KathNiel (or any other portmanteau love team you know), there were these actors and actresses who delivered the same intensity of kilig to our ates and even our mamas and titas. It’s safe to say that even though a lot of years have passed between these pairings and their last movie together, their fans have never given up hope that they will one day star in the big screen one more. (And some of them actually have plans!)

Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin

Via Mulawin Wiki

Watch them in: Mulawin (2004), Mulawin: The Movie (2005), Let the Love Begin (2005), I Will Always Love You (2006), The Promise (2007), La Luna Sangre (2017)

Why we love them: We love them for their genuineness and for defying the unspoken curse of falling in love with your on-screen partner. The pairing of Richard and Angel was one of the most popular love teams in the mid-2000s, their chemistry resonated with audiences whether in movies or TV series. It’s a miracle they survived each other’s charms, but it was for the best as, throughout the past decade, they remain great friends and both led separate successful careers.

Where they are now: Richard is set to marry long-time partner actress/model Sarah Lahbati with whom he has two sons with, Zion and Kai. Angel is currently starring in the ABS-CBN primetime series The General’s Daughter, and in her spare time, she also helps save the world from know-it-alls on social media.

The pair is set to have their reunion movie under Star Cinema entitled Wife, Husband, Wife alongside Angelica Panganiban. Unfortunately, the movie was put on hold back in May 2018.

Judy Ann Santos and Piolo Pascual

Via PinoyExchange

Watch them in: Kahit Isang Saglit (2000), Bakit ‘Di Totohanin (2001), Till There Was You (2003), Don’t Give Up on Us (2006)

Why we love them: Because who wouldn’t love the charming Piolo Pascual in his prime and the charisma of Judy Ann? Although they were often partnered with other love teams in different movies, their natural chemistry on screen was a big hit. Their pairing ultimately gave them their big break in the industry. Sadly, the last time we saw them in a movie was 13 years ago, after that there have been rumors of a rift between them. But in an interview with ABS-CBN back in 2017, Piolo admits he is more than willing to star in a reunion movie opposite Juday again one day.

Where they are now: Judy Ann recently celebrated a decade of marriage with husband Ryan Agoncillo. They have three children together, Yohan, Lucho, and Luna. Now, she’s focusing on her YouTube channel, Judy Ann’s Kitchen. Piolo continues to star in and produce movies, and has an upcoming film under Star Cinema.

Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales

Via KAMI

Watch them in: Pangako Sa’Yo (2000), Forevermore (2002), Saya’y Wala Nang Wakas (2003), Ngayong Nandito Ka (2003),

Why we love them: They were a reel-to-real couple that made everyone with a heartbeat curl their toes in kilig. Echo and Kristine met when she was 16 and he was 20. Both were propelled into the limelight when they were cast for Pangako Sa’yo, and amid the celebrity highs, flashing lights, and the love from their fans, they fell in love. But it’s the pressure from high expectations and their own immature ways that became their downfall. Still, years later, Kristine admits Echo was her ‘first love,’ and while both seldom meet anymore, they still are on friendly terms, which is more than we could ever ask for.

Where they are now: Echo is happily married to Filipina fashion blogger Kim Cam Jones and is an environmental advocate, while Kristine is married to Oyo Boy Sotto with whom she has 4 children.

John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo

Via Who’s Dated Who

Watch them in: My First Romance (2003), Now That I Have You (2004), All About Love (2006), Close To You (2006), One More Chance (2007), Miss You Like Crazy (2010), The Mistress (2012), A Second Chance (2015)

Why we liked them: More than the chemistry, it was John Lloyd and Bea’s superb acting that cemented them in our hearts as one of the most iconic Pinoy love teams ever. They grew up before our eyes, beginning as cute 15-year-olds to a couple weathering through a bad relationship in One More Chance. We watched them again as a couple who’ve been together for a number of years fighting to keep their flame alive in A Second Chance. Even though both of them have been partnered with different people, the spark between JLC and Bea is unique and can never be replaced.

We desperately need another film!

Where they are now: John Lloyd has recently taken a break from the limelight and is in a relationship with fellow actress Ellen Adarna, who he has a son with. Bea continues to star in movies, her latest being Eerie, a thriller by Mikhail Red.

Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin

Via CNN Philippines

Watch them in: F.L.A.M.E.S. (1997), Kung Ayaw Mo, Huwag Mo (1998), Labs Kita… Okey Ka Lang? (1998), Hey Babe! (1999), I Luv NY (2006), Adik Sa’Yo (2009)

Why we like them: It’s Bujoy and Ned, our favorite 90s best friends-turned-lovers! Their movie Labs Kita, Okey Ka Lang ? was the generation’s anthem for everyone who fell in love with their best friend. Toe-curling kilig coming from the iconic pairing of Jolina and Marvin who left a mark on the entire generation, and had us clamoring for more. Fast forward 21 years later after Labs Kita, Okey Ka Lang? was released, writer/directors Dan Villegas and Antoinette Jadaone say they might be making a sequel with the original cast. We can’t wait!

Where they are now: Jolina married Rivermaya’s drummer, Mark Escueta in 2011, they have 2 children together. She is also a full-time host for ABS-CBN’ Magandang Buhay. Marvin is not only an excellent actor, but an amazing entrepreneur as well. He took up culinary courses and now has successfully opened at least 50 restaurant branches and 11 brands.

Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion

Via Pinterest

Watch them in: Dear Heart (1981), P.S. I Love You (1981), My Only Love (1982), Tayong Dalawa  (1992)

Why we like them: Will there ever be a Pinoy love team list without this couple in it? ShaGab took the nation by a storm way before your favorite 90s couple. They rocketed to fame in the 1980s when they were cast as lovers in Dear Heart. From there, they became a real couple who eventually married and welcomed a daughter, KC. But unfortunately, a few years after the marriage, they split. In February 2018, they were reunited for a commercial shoot that garnered over 3 million views online. If there’s one thing that proves it’s that ShaGab is timeless and our moms and dads would definitely agree with us on this one.

A post shared by Gabby Concepcion (@concepciongabby) on Feb 8, 2018 at 9:34pm PST

Where they are now: Sharon is now a dedicated mom to her four kids (KC, Frankie, Miel, and Miguel) with Senator Kiko Pangilinan. Gabby is currently under GMA Network and is starring in the dramedy Love You Two with Jennylyn Mercado.

Heart Evangelista and John Prats

Via Who’s Dated Who

Watch them in: G-Mik (1999), Trip (2001) My First Romance (2002),

Why we like them: They were a match made in heaven back then. Both born on Valentine’s Day, this pair showed us the thrills, excitements, and kilig of falling in love in real life. John and Heart weren’t as big a pairing as, say, Jolina and Marvin, but they made us hope that someday we could find a person who would tell us sweet nothings like “Love Marie? I want to give her my last name!”

Where they are now: Both are happily married to their respective spouses, Heart to Senator Chiz Escudero, and John to Isabel Oli. There seems to be no hope for a movie reunion with these two but we can hope, can we?

Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson

Via YouTube: Pinoy Trending Showbiz TMBYN

Watch them in: Sana Maulit Muli (2007), I’ve Fallen For You (2007), My Girl (2008), Tayong Dalawa (2009), Paano Na Kaya (2010), Till My Heartaches End (2010), Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo (2010)

Why we like them: Kim and Gerald met when they were still housemates during the first edition of Pinoy Big Brother (which Kim won). Their natural chemistry was evident during their time in the reality show, and after years of projects together, their on-screen romance translated to real life. In 2010, however, they broke up. Recently, Gerald credited his success in the industry through hard work and because of his then-love team partner Kim Chiu. They’ve just finished a teleserye together, Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin back in 2017 but we’re still hoping we will be granted one more Kimerald movie.

Where they are now: Gerald’s latest movie, Between Maybes starring his leading lady Julia Barretto was released last May. He is also a celebrity basketball player playing under Imus Bandera. Gerald is currently in a relationship with actress Bea Alonzo. Kim is dating actor Xian Lim, she has also recently started a vlog channel.

Kyzia spends most of her time capturing the world around her through photos, paragraphs, and playlists. She is constantly on the hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie, and a great paperback thriller to pair with it.
