BINI is composed of 8 members: Aiah (19), Colet (18), Maloi (18), Gwen (17), Stacey (17), Mikha (16), Jhoanna (16), and Sheena (16). Each member is a young, pretty, and extremely talented Pinay who knows how to sing, dance, and charm their way into your hearts. Their specialties range from modeling and dancing to songwriting and even news reporting.
The group’s name in Filipino literally means “hinhin” or “modesty”. But some fans also believe that the name is also inspired by the word “binibini” (i.e. miss, young lady).
Before BINI became BINI, Star Hunt Academy (SHA) held auditions in 2018 looking for fresh talents from all over the nation to turn into world-class idols. According to the members, more than 250 aspirants were accepted into the program, but after several challenges, including a one-week boot camp, the 250 was brought down to a final selection of 5 boys and 8 girls. And after two years of training, the 8 girls are finally making their debut as BINI.
In an interview with It’s Showtime, the girls revealed some challenges they encountered during their training years. Some of the most challenging things they experienced are the long waiting time before their debut, the intense training and practice, and of course, being far away from their family during that time. They had to spend most of their time with one another and their coaches to train and prepare themselves for the stage, so it left little time to see their family and friends. The girls shared that sometimes, they’ve even thought of quitting, but they decided that their dream is worth all the blood, sweat, and tears.
In the two years before their debut, BINI has undergone rigorous training under Filipino voice coaches Kitchy Molina and Anna Graham and Austrian-born dance coach Mickey Perz. The group also headed to Korea to receive mentorship from South Korean training group MU Doctor, which is known for training K-Pop idols like Mino (WINNER), Hye-bin (Momoland), Hyojung (Oh My Girl), I.M (Monsta X), Changbin (Stray Kids), and Kim Sohee (Produce 101).
Their first ever single is a remake of the classic “Da Coconut Nut” composed by National Artist Ryan Cayabyab. Teen group Smokey Mountain originally popularized this piece back in the 1990s. And now, BINI turned it into a fresh, upbeat, electro-pop remix that you can’t help but dance to. MU Doctor worked with Korean musical producer VO3E to recreate the song, while Korean dance coaches Moon Yeon Joo and Kwan Seong Chan (who have also worked with Korean groups BTS, Twice, Red Velvet, and Seventeen) helped create the choreography.
