We can’t deny the fact that 2020 has been an extraordinary year and we’ve probably used Google now more than ever: from what’s to why’s. Google Philippines just shared the most-searched queries in the country, and while we anticipated most of these, some of the items that made the cut were… interesting, to say the least.
The year has been nothing but a series of news and it’s gotten to a point where the bad outweighed the good. How many times have you avoided news completely to lessen the anxiety? This year, the world watched the US Election closely as Donald Trump and Joe Biden fought to win the race, making it 2020’s most-searched news. Following the list are events that shook the world and the nation, like Coronavirus, Taal Volcano, and Typhoon Ulysses.
You’ve probably spent hours on different streaming sites more than ever this year to soothe the cabin fever. Though it was released in February, it seems like everyone fell in love with Captain Ri and So Ye Jin’s chemistry in Crash Landing on You and their adventures with the captain’s soldiers. We miss the gang too!
Second on the list is the Spanish series Money Heist followed by It’s Okay To Not Be Okay and the recently concluded K-drama, Start-Up. Are you Team Nam Do San or Team Han Ji Pyeong?
Though there were a lot of amazing music releases both from international and local artists this year, it seems that Pinoys are missing the 2010s as Miley Cyrus’ When I Look At You topped the list. Taylor Swift may have released Folklore that made us all senti AF, but her chart-topping song released in 2008 (!!), Love Story, made it to top 3.
Dance crazes were also popularized this year thanks to TikTok, which made Sarah Geronimo’s Tala second on the list. Pinoys also can’t get enough of hugot songs like Moira’s recent release, Paubaya. What song helped you get through 2020?
Now this one is a shocker as the local film starring Alessandra De Rossi and Paolo Contis, Through Night and Day, ranked higher than the most-talked and award-winning movie of the year, Parasite. Though the local film was released in 2018, it’s one of the many local films added to Netflix during the quarantine. Through Night and Day was an absolute tearjerker and maybe we just needed an excuse to cry because this year is just. too. much.
Anyway. The other movies included in the list are Enola Holmes, Mulan, and Black Panther.
Let’s be honest – the K-drama wave was real this year that even non-fans started getting addicted too. There’s no wondering why Crash Landing On You made it on top of the list again, as it’s the drama that started it all. Second on the list is It’s Okay To Not Be Okay followed by Start-Up and Itaewon Class. It also seems that Pinoys are still very much into the cheating/agawan ng asawa trope as The World of the Married landed on top 5.
Among all the K-drama characters we fell in love with this year, one oppa ruled them all: Hyun Bin. Who wouldn’t fall in love with Captain slash Tomato Cultivator’s charms? Other oppas that made it to the list are Kim Soo-Hyun and So Ji-Sub. But we’re seeing more females on the list this year including the gorgeous ladies from hit K-dramas like The King: The Eternal Monarch’s Kim Go-Eun, It’s Okay To Not Be Okay’s Son Ye-Jin, and The World of the Married’’s Han So-Hee.
Though there are many K-pop stans in the country, only two groups made it to the list and they’re also all female: London’s first and controversial K-pop girl group Kaachi and SM Entertainment’s newest girl group Aespa.
One of the many things we weren’t prepared for this is how often we’d deal with grief: from acquaintances, loved ones, to even our favorite personalities. We lost many legendary personalities this year that shook us, including the tragic death of NBA star Kobe Bryant. We also lost a beloved local vloggers Lloyd Cadena and Emman Nimedez, and Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman.
This list wouldn’t be complete without the one the questions we ask Google the most: how to’s. The months-long quarantine has made us invest into different hobbies to cope with the isolation: many are coming out as home cooks, bakers, and even plant parents. There’s no wondering why “how to make dalgona coffee?” made it to the top; it’s the year’s most viral recipe after all. Making the coffee alone is already a work out!
Second on the list is pandemic-related “how to wear a surgical mask?” which started with the Taal Volcano eruption and “how to compute BMI?” – Pinoys are getting into that balik alindog program! One of the shocking how-to’s that made it to the list are education-related: “how to divide fractions?” and “how to solve quadratic equations?”. Let’s be real, parents are doing more modules now more than ever.
